Utah (6-1) vs. California (4-3) Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

The team might be in a bit of a freefall over the last three games, but the Cal defense is still the Cal defense.

It’s possible to pound the ball a bit on the Bears, but they’re still allowing fewer than four yards per carry.

It’s possible to throw on the secondary, but it’s allowing fewer than six yards per pass.

The Cal D bends but just doesn’t break offense enough to make anyone feel comfortable. The Utah offense might be humming, but for all the good things its doing, it struggled to get the ground game going – relatively speaking – against the solid Arizona State defense last week in the 21-3 win. It ran for a season-low 151 yards against the only terrific run D it’s faced so far.

Cal’s is stronger and holds up better.

Utah QB Tyler Huntley got knocked around a bit and is expected to go, but he’s not going to be at 100%. The Bear defense is good enough to keep this to around 20 points even if all the Ute parts are working, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Utah Will Win

The Cal offense was having problems before, and now it’s got even more issues at quarterback.

Chase Garbers wasn’t Aaron Rodgers, but he was efficient and effective before getting knocked out with a shoulder injury. Backup Devon Modster is questionable at best after getting injured against Oregon State. The offense wasn’t exactly humming with him under center, but if it’s freshman Spencer Brasch getting the call, it’s pin the ears back and go time for the Ute D.

Utah’s defense isn’t giving up a thing.

It’s No. 1 in the Pac-12 and fourth in the nation, allowing 252 yards per game  and next to nothing against the run. The Utes might not be scoring a whole lot on this Cal D, but it really and truly might only take one good scoring drive to put this away.

What’s Going To Happen

Be very, very afraid of Utah.

It’s been forgotten about a bit after the loss to USC a few weeks ago, but the defense is playing as well as any in college football, the offense is balanced and efficient, and no one’s coming close to touching this team.

It’s very much in the Pac-12 title hunt, and it’s about to get through a tough, nasty game to take that next step before dealing with Washington next week.

It’ll be a slow, methodical game, but Cal just won’t be able to score. The Ute D will come up with stop after stop, and the ground game will do just enough barrel its way to a few early scores to put this away.

The heroic effort from the Bear D won’t be enough.
