Utah (5-1) vs. Arizona State (5-1) Game Preview

Why Utah Will Win

The defense continues to be a killer.

It had one weird and bad day in LA against USC, and that’s been it. Now, Oregon is getting all the Pac-12 defensive love because it’s shutting everyone down to a dead stop. Meanwhile, the Utes were a stone wall against the Washington State passing game and stopped a – don’t laugh – solid Oregon State offense cold.

As good as the Ducks are, and as tough as Washington and Arizona State have been defensively, Utah leads the Pac-12 against the run, owns third down tops, and is tenth in the nation in total D.

The secondary has at least one interception in every game, no one has been able to hit the 100-yard mark on this group, and the offensive side has been exactly what it was supposed to be coming into the season.

It’s not turning the ball over, the running game is grinding, and the team dominates the clock and the tempo.

Arizona State’s defense has been outstanding at times, but it doesn’t generate enough pressure into the backfield and it doesn’t make the big plays that Utah’s D does. However …

Why Arizona State Will Win

The Sun Devils are outstanding against the run, too.

Statistically, that’s partially because they’re playing teams like Washington State and Colorado that prefer air travel as their mode of transportation, and it’s partially because Sacramento State and Cal aren’t Wisconsin when it comes to running the ball.

However, this really is a fantastic defensive front that’s allowing fewer than 100 yards per game and isn’t getting gouged when teams do commit to the run.

ASU isn’t going to beat itself. To have any shot against this Utah team on the road, you can’t give up the ball, and you can’t make a slew of dumb plays. The Sun Devils lead the conference with the fewest penalties, and they’re not turning the ball over.

They’ve dealt with good defenses so far with road games against Michigan State and Cal, and they managed to grind their way to wins. However …

What’s Going To Happen

The Sun Devils are about to have a problem with Tyler Huntley.

The Utah QB isn’t Oregon’s Justin Herbert, Washington State’s Anthony Gordon or Washington’s Jacob Eason when it comes to the national attention and respect, but he’s been nothing short of brilliant.

So far he’s hitting 76% of his passes for close to 1,400 yards and nine scores with no picks. This is a big play Ute offense that’s about to show it against the ASU secondary that won’t be able to handle everything the attack can do.
