UCF (4-1) vs. Cincinnati (3-1) Game Preview
Why UCF Will Win
The offense is still amazing.
Cincinnati has a strong attack that can do a little of everything right, but UCF keeps on bombing away with an O that’s occasionally making it look easy.
Blowing away UConn and Florida Atlantic isn’t any big deal, but freshman QB Dillon Gabriel is connecting on the downfield passing game against everyone. He might not be consistent quite yet, but he’s accurate, he’s growing into the starting role, and he has a passer rating over 190. 200 is historically amazing.
Cincinnati played one team with a passing game – Ohio State – and it got picked apart. Granted, that’s Ohio State – UCF isn’t that good – but the Bearcat secondary is about to be pushed.
UC overall has the talent to pull this off, but it makes way too many mistakes, gets flagged too often, and it’s not winning the turnover battle lately. However …
Why Cincinnati Will Win
Can the Bearcats grind it out?
Time of possession doesn’t mean everything or, sometimes, anything when a team is able to strike quickly like UCF can. However, in this game, the Knights are going to need the ball more than 26 minutes – their normal average.
The Bearcats can play with a little bit of tempo, but the more they can control the clock, the more they’ll make the UCF offense press a bit.
This mattered in the UCF loss to Pitt. The Knight O was able to explode in the third quarter, but when the Panthers needed to take back momentum, they were able to grind just enough with a running game that pushed for close to 200 yards. They held the ball for almost 36 minutes, and Cincinnati can follow the same formula.
What’s Going To Happen
Cincinnati will get up early, it’ll get the pass rush going to bother Gabriel and force a slew of misfires, and then playtime will be over.
The UCF defense doesn’t get enough credit. Its playmaking ability in the backfield is dominant at times, the secondary feasts off of desperate teams trying to keep up, and it’s not put in bad positions by an offense that doesn’t make a slew of mistakes.
UCF will balance out the offense enough get off of the funky Cincinnati field alive.
