Texas (3-1) vs. West Virginia (3-1) Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

The running game is starting to balance things out.

There haven’t been a whole slew of shots down the field, and Austin Kendall isn’t doing any sort of a Will Grier impersonation, but he’s been steady. He’s able to do just enough with the passing game to push for over 200 yards, but he needs the backs to do their part.

The ground game that couldn’t crack 35 yards in either of the first two games was able to run for three scores in each of the last two weeks, and all of a sudden, the team started to look a whole lot better.

But this might be the game for Kendall to go off.

Texas is getting lit up, allowing 250 yards or more in three of the last four games, and allowing over eight yards per throw. When Oklahoma State committed to the ground game against the Longhorns, it worked. If the Mountaineers are able to control things enough to run the ball 40 times or more, they’ll dictate the tempo. However …

Why Texas Will Win

The Mountaineers really don’t have the firepower to keep up if Texas gets rolling early.

Sam Ehlinger has been brilliant so far, hitting 73% of his passes with four touchdowns in three of his four games and three against Rice. Over the last few weeks he’s been cranking up the attack down the field a little more, hitting ten yards per throw as Texas is making bigger plays and showing off more explosions.

West Virginia’s secondary struggled a bit against Missouri, and had too many issues with Kansas. The Mountaineers will bring the pass rush, but Ehlinger is good at getting the ball out of his hands fast to his guys on the move.

If he gets hot early, and if Texas can take a decent early lead, good luck getting the Big 12-worst Mountaineer offense going at the level it’ll need to be at.

What’s Going To Happen

West Virginia will try to gear down a bit and rely on its offensive balance and  ball control style to keep Texas from going off, but Ehlinger and the Longhorn offense will be too much in bursts.

When needed, the rested Longhorn pass rush will come through on third downs to stall the Mountaineers just enough for the other side to take over.
