What’s Going To Happen
And now it’s really on for SMU.
The 6-0 start was fun with wins over TCU and North Texas along the way, but now the American Athletic Conference schedule kicks in full-force. Win this, and and then with three road games in the next four, there’s room for a misfire. Lose, and then it’s uh-oh time with Memphis, Navy and Tulane still to deal with.
Temple is right there in the title hunt, too, with a terrific win over Memphis this week. It already beat one unbeaten team, and now it needs to take out another with UCF, Tulane and Cincinnati still to go.
How is SMU doing this? The passing game is just behind UCF’s as the best in the conference, but no AAC O is better at converting on third downs. It’ll be strength vs. strength as the fantastic Mustang pass rush goes against the wall of a Temple line that’s not giving up plays in the backfield.
This the game when Shane Buechele really earns his stripes.
The Texas transfer has been outstanding so far, but he’ll have to be even sharper for SMU after the Owls take out star RB Xavier Jones. The Temple defense isn’t allowing much of anything on the ground – it stuffed Memphis last week – but Buechele will throw for 275 yards, hit his third down throws, and at home, will take the Mustangs to 7-0 and a whole lot of national attention.
