Temple (3-1) vs. East Carolina (3-2) Game Preview
Why Temple Will Win
The Owl defense should be able to stop the East Carolina passing game just enough to be okay.
The Pirates are fine, throwing the ball – at least they’re consistent – but they don’t hit on too many shots down the field and don’t do enough to overcome a mediocre running game. They’ve only played three games against FBS teams so far, and they failed to hit 50% of their passes in two of them.
Temple’s pass defense stats are skewed – playing Georgia Tech helps – but Buffalo is the only team so far to connect on half of the throws, and no one has been able to hit the 200-yard mark.
Maryland is the only team to throw a touchdown pass against the Owl D that’s good enough at getting behind the line to be a bother. For this game, the bigger deal will be the downfield passes. Again, ECU isn’t all that great at it, and Temple only allowed teams to connect on 4.6 yards per throw.
Why East Carolina Will Win
Temple has a turnover problem
How did the Owls lost to a mediocre Buffalo team by 16? Four turnovers.
They gave it away three times against Maryland, in the four games they lost the turnover battle in three of them.
The Pirates have to come up with a good pace early on. They need to get the young running backs involved right away, QB Holton Ahlers has to be a whole lot sharper on his midrange throws than he was in the win over Old Dominion, and they have to find a way to control the pace.
ECU can’t let the Temple defense take over, and it can’t let this get into a shootout – the Owls can bomb away a bit better. To pull this off, the Pirates have to do something they haven’t been able to for most of the year and dominate the clock.
They have to take advantage of the conditions, because …
What’s Going To Happen
It might be really, really hot.
Everyone will have to play through it, but are the Temple players ready to handle the weather” It’s supposed to be in the upper 90s and stupid-humid all day tomorrow in Greenville, but it could break a bit by game time.
Temple’s defense will do enough to stall the ECU offense in key spots, and QB Anthony Russo will have a decent performance after struggling a bit over the last two weeks.
Don’t expect anything remotely pretty out of these two.
