Stanford (3-4) vs. Arizona (4-3) Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

Arizona is sort of a mess.

Is Khalil Tate still the quarterback? Is it time to turn the reins over to Grant Gunnell and start working on 2020 right now?

The Cats still have a good passing attack n matter who’s under center, and the ground game is averaging 200 yards per game, but the offense isn’t able to keep up thanks to a defense that’s getting torn apart.

There’s no pass rush – it’s hard to be last in the Pac-12 in sacks this year – the secondary is getting hit by everyone who can be even slightly accurate, and there aren’t any picks over the last three games.

Stanford has to be all Stanford at home. It has to control the clock for well over 35 minutes – like it normally does – and it has to find some semblance of a running game to take advantage of a UofA D that’s getting gouged every bit as much on the ground as it is through the air.

Can the Cardinal get out to a hot start? There’s an outside chance it gets back one of its top quarterbacks, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Arizona Will Win

KJ Costello and Davis Mills aren’t anywhere close to 100%. If one or both can play, it’s not going to be easy, and Jack West is coming off a disastrous game against UCLA.

Arizona might have quarterback questions, but the O can run the ball, and it should be able to rip off big yards and big dashes out of the gate. Oregon State ran for three scores against the Cardinal a few weeks ago, and UCLA came up with big dash after big dash in last week’s 34-16 win.

Just about ANY early lead ends this.

As much as the Arizona defense might be struggling, there’s just now Stanford offense to worry about. There’s zero downfield passing game, the ground attack is struggling to average 115 yards per game, and the line is too banged up to come up with any sort of quality rotation if this gets into a grind.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a while since Arizona turned it loose with a massive commitment to the ground game. This has to be the time to give it a shot.

Yeah, the Wildcats lost to Washington and USC, but those two are far stronger than whatever Stanford is right now.

The Cardinal are able to hang around with is plucky-tough style, but there really is no offense there to come through when needed. The Cats will get the O going just enough early on to make the home team press, and it won’t be able to produce enough to keep up.
