South Carolina (3-5) vs. Vanderbilt (2-5) Game Preview

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Can the Commodore passing game take advantage of the suddenly-shaky Gamecock secondary?

For all the good things the USC DBs did in the win over Georgia, they also got hit almost 300 yards. They’ve allowed over 850 yards in the last three games, getting bombed on by Florida’s Kyle Trask and – inexcusably – getting hammered in last week’s loss at Tennessee.

Whether it’s Mo Hasan – who’s coming off a concussion against Missouri – or Riley Neal, the Vanderbilt quarterbacks have to keep pressing. There haven’t been a whole slew of downfield shots, and Hasan’s two touchdown passes against Missouri made it the second time all year the team had multiple scoring throws, but the pieces are there to at least dink and dunk.

Fortunately for the Commodore D, South Caroline doesn’t have much of a downfield passing game, either.

Why South Carolina Will Win

The Gamecock lines should be able to take over from the start.

Vanderbilt doesn’t have a pass rush, and its struggled to do much to keep the better lines out of the backfield. South Carolina doesn’t give up tackles for loss, and Javon Kinlaw and company on the defensive front should be able to bother Hasan or Neal on a consistent basis.

Offensively, the Gamecocks don’t need to press too hard with the passing attack – start running and keep it going.

UNLV and Ole Miss have different styles than USC, but they were able to combine or over 600 yards on the ground and rip of big run after big run. The Gamecocks were able to run well against Florida, were stunningly stuffed by Tennessee, and won against Kentucky by grinding it out.

Over the last three years, South Carolina is 16-2 when running 36 times or more – the two losses came to Florida. Five of the seven teams Vanderbilt faced so far ran 36 times or more.

What’s Going To Happen

South Carolina will get up off the mat in a hurry with a grinding effort against the Commodores. The offensive balance will work from the start, and the defensive front will take over stalling Vandy drive after drive. A rested Commodore team will keep it close, but the offense won’t be consistent enough.
