South Carolina (3-4) vs. Tennessee (2-5) Game Preview
Why South Carolina Will Win
If it’s possible to not get totally obliterated on the road at Alabama and still come away worse than before. that’s what Tennessee did.
Jarrett Guarantano was roasted for trying to dive in for a late touchdown, but had he not fumbled, the game would’ve been interesting late. Instead, there’s a massive quarterback mess. Guarantano is struggling, Brian Maurer is having no luck whatsoever with concussions, and freshman JT Shrout hit just three of his ten throws so far in his limited time.
Tennessee is dead last in the SEC in third down conversion stops, the turnovers keep flowing, and it’s not doing all of the little things it needs to do to make up for the lack of overall talent compared to the decent-to-great SEC teams.
The South Carolina running game has turned it on over the last few weeks – running for 247 yards and three scores against Kentucky, and ran for 217 yards and two scores in the slop against Florida.
Start running, keep running, and assume the Vols won’t have the scoring pop to keep up.
Why Tennessee Will Win
Tennessee might have third down issues on both sides, but South Carolina can’t keep the chains moving – it’s converting just 34% of its tries.
There’s no downfield passing game, there’s no stretching the field, and there’s no controlling the clock. In a perfect world, the Gamecocks can get up early and grind out the game, but that’s not really what they do.
Tennessee might have big issues with its offensive consistency, but the defense is holding up reasonably well considering it’s not getting a whole lot of help. The secondary can be torched by the decent passing teams on the slate – Florida, Georgia and Alabama were all good – but that’s not South Carolina.
Ryan Hilinski hasn’t been close to throwing for 200 yards in the last four games, is still trying to fight through getting banged up against Georgia, and he’s leading an offense that can’t run away and hide.
Tennessee’s offense is playing someone it can hang with.

What’s Going To Happen
Here’s the problem with Tennessee. It has just enough in place to beat a team like South Carolina that has its own massive issues, but outside of the Mississippi State win, it hasn’t shown the ability to keep it all together for a full 60 minutes. South Carolina will win late on a Parker White field goal in a close, entertaining game with a whole load of storylines for both sides.
