Rutgers (1-6) vs. Liberty (2-5) Game Preview
Why Rutgers Will Win
Is anything going right?
It’s been beyond a lost season for the program as it’s in a holding pattern before finding a new head coach and a new direction, but beyond just getting a slew of young players in the mix, the offensive line isn’t totally miserable, the kicking game is okay, and the pressure is completely and totally off.
This is still a Big Ten team, and it’s going against a decent Independent team that doesn’t have a whole lot of depth and hasn’t done much o anything against anyone who’s any good.
There was a blowout win over Buffalo, but there are two wins over FCS teams to go along with the world tour of New Mexico schools.
The Flames struggle to keep the offense moving, they have a hard time scoring when they get their chances, and they don’t do a whole lot to control the game and the clock.
Why Liberty Will Win
Liberty has a passing game. Rutgers really, really doesn’t.
Stephen Calvert is a yardage machine, throwing for 300 yards in four of his last five games with 14 touchdown passes and no picks. He’s a good veteran who won’t be fazed in any way by playing a Big Ten school – even if it is Rutgers – and now he’s going against a Scarlet Knight pass defense that’s getting hit for big yards and too many big plays, allowing two touchdowns or more in each of the last four games.
The Rutgers passing game? It’s still playing around with the quarterback options to see if it can find anything that works, and nothing is happening. There haven’t been any touchdown passes in the last four games, just one since the opener against UMass, and with a grand total of 49 yards in the last two games.

What’s Going To Happen
Can Rutgers get the ground attack going?
Isaih Pacheco keeps fighting the good fight, and the Liberty defensive front can be pounded on. The Scarlet Knights will score, and they’ll come up with their best game in weeks, and it won’t matter, because Calvert and the Flame offense will take over as the game goes on.
