Pitt (3-2) vs. Duke (3-1) Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

Te defense is putting together a nice year. The line is doing a great job of holding up against the run, the pass rush is a killer, and overall, the D is allowing just 300 yards per game.

It’s doing a great job of getting off the field in a hurry – it’s owning third downs – and it’s allowing the offense to control the tempo and the time. Pitt is solid at making teams play down to its own level, keeping Penn State’s offense under wraps and not letting games get out of hand.

Duke has no downfield passing game – it’s averaging a minuscule ten yards per completion – and Pitt’s defensive problem has been giving up the big play. However …

Why Duke Will Win

The Duke passing game is working. No, there might not be a whole lot of downfield plays, but there are a whole lot of midrange ones to keep things moving.

QB Quentin Harris had a better first four games than Daniel Jones enjoyed last year, hitting 73% of his passes with ten touchdown passes and two picks, with both of them coming against Alabama.

In the three games since dealing with the Crimson Tide, Jones and the passing game are connecting on more than 80% of all passes – it’s all clicking.

Harris is just good enough at getting the ball out of his hands in a hurry to counteract the Pitt pass rush – Duke leads the nation in the fewest sacks allowed, giving up just one – and he’s careful with the ball.

The Blue Devils have turned it over just five times so far. Pitt’s defense doesn’t take the ball away and doesn’t force enough big mistakes – expect Duke to be a +2 in turnover margin.

What’s Going To Happen

The Blue Devils are just too sharp. Pitt’s offense is okay, but with QB Kenny Pickett banged up – but playing – it doesn’t have the offense and scoring punch to take over once Harris gets going. It’s not going to be a shootout, but neither team will do enough to pull away – this won’t be like Duke’s 45-10 win over Virginia Tech.

All of a sudden, the Blue Devils will be talked about in the discussion of candidates to be the ACC’s second-best team.
