Penn State (4-0) vs. Purdue (1-3) Game Preview

Why Purdue Will Win

Even with the brilliant performance against Maryland, the Penn State offense isn’t all that great on third downs.

Pitt was able to stuff the Nittany Lions time and again, and Buffalo and Idaho stalled the offense way too often. Purdue’s defense hasn’t been stellar on third downs, but it’s going to have to come up with something massive and give its offense as many breaks as possible.

Even with the injuries, the Purdue passing game sill works. Jack Plummer is a veteran now with enough experience to hold his own. He has to limit his mistakes – he threw two picks last week in the loss to Minnesota – but he should be able to push the ball deep.

The pressure is all on the Penn State side and all off Plummer and the Boilermakers. Purdue will be able to bomb away with the Nittany Lions possibly looking ahead to the trip to Iowa – this is supposed to be an easy win, but Purdue has the offense to keep up. However …

Why Penn State Will Win

Purdue won’t have starting quarterback Elijah Sindelar – he’s out with a broken clavicle – and star receiver Rondale Moore is banged up with a leg injury.

The Purdue offense is good, explosive, and it has playmakers – it’s better than anything Penn State has faced so far – but the Purdue defense is stuffing everything.

The pass rush is a killer, the line lives behind the line, and overall the defense is just behind Wisconsin in fewest points allowed.

QB Sean Clifford was just okay over the first few games, and then he went off against Maryland. He connected on 26-of-31 passes for 398 yards and three scores with a pick, and he ran for 54 yards and a score in the blowout.

The Purdue secondary has been ripped to shreds so far, giving up 420 yards to Vanderbilt and last week getting destroyed by deep play after deep play against a Minnesota O that averaged 18 yards per pass.

What’s Going To Happen

It won’t be the Maryland-level performance from the Nittany Lions, but they’ll be able to fire away at will on a hapless Purdue defense that’s going to get bombed away on. The Boilermaker offense won’t hit 50 yards rushing, it’ll turn the ball over three times, and it’ll be another easy day for James Franklin’s club.
