Penn State (7-0) vs. Michigan State (4-3) Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

The Michigan State offense has gone bye-bye.

Granted, it had to go on the road to deal with Ohio State and Wisconsin before getting two weeks off, but it sputtered and struggled against Arizona State, too.

And now it has to deal with a defense that had a rough second half against Michigan, but has lived in the backfield throughout the season so far.

The Nittany Lions have a fantastic array of playmakers who can get behind the line – 21 players have registered at least one tackle for loss and 13 have a sack – and they keep coming in waves. The Michigan State offensive line is doing an okay job in pass protection, but it’s not doing nearly enough to pound away for the running game that’s been stuffed for fewer than 100 yards in the last two games and under 150 in every game but the win over Western Michigan.

Meanwhile, the Penn State offense has found a good balance, enough explosion to get do what it needs to in key moments, and it’s not turning the ball over with just six on the year so far and three coming in one game – the blowout over Purdue. The team isn’t making the types of mistakes the sputtering MSU offense should need.

Why Michigan State Will Win

The team should be rested and recharged.

Yeah, it didn’t do anything in the losses to Ohio State and Wisconsin. but that’s Ohio State and Wisconsin on the road at the end of a run of three road games in four weeks, and with with the Arizona State game before that.

The offense really isn’t that bad – it was just that bad against two of the elite teams and best defenses in college football.

Penn State has one of those defenses, too, but now things are reversed a bit. This will be the third road game in five weeks for the Nittany Lions, and last week was the emotional White Out win over Michigan where the team looked like it was a wee bit out of gas late.

The Penn State offense might have hit a few home runs to get by the Wolverines, but for the most part, it struggled against Iowa and had issues against Pitt. Now it gets to deal with a Michigan State defense that has the talent, the experience, and the fresh legs.

And it’s a defense that’s had its pride wounded a bit after allowing close to 550 rushing yards against the Badgers and Buckeyes. And then there’s …

What’s Going To Happen

Mark Dantonio and Michigan State own Penn State lately. They’ve won the last two seasons and four in the last five. The last time the Spartans lost to the Nittany Lions in East Lansing was all the way back in 2009.

Again, don’t discount the rest factor. Penn State might be better in several ways, and it might be coming in on a high from the Michigan win, but it’s gone through a grind.

The 2016 Michigan State team was a disaster, but that was the last season it lost three games in a row since 2009. At home, this is the when the Spartan defense rises up and looks like the group everyone expected at the start of the season. However, Penn State’s defense will show up, too.

It’ll be a close, tight game – it’ll be what the Michigan-Penn State was supposed to be – with the Spartans surviving on a whole slew of big late stops.
