Oregon (7-1) vs. USC (5-3) Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

The Ducks should own the mistake battle.

USC doesn’t have a ton of problems with giveaways – at least over the last three weeks after turning it over 13 times in the first five games – but Oregon has been air-tight.

The offense turned it over three times against Cal, but has a grand total of zero giveaways in five of the last six games. The Duck D isn’t forcing fumbles, but the secondary has generated eight interceptions in the last three games.

And the offense is pretty good, too.

Of course Justin Herbert is the star of the show, but last week the running game took over against Washington State. CJ Verdell ran or 257 yards in the win, and the O has hit 250 rushing yards in two of the last three games. Herbert will have to keep pushing the passing game, but USC’s defensive front was hit for over 300 yards by Notre Dame and is giving up close to 200 rushing yards per game.

Oregon should be able to move the ball however it wants to.

Why USC Will Win

All of a sudden, the Oregon secondary is having problems. It stuffed Colorado, but before that, it didn’t face a whole slew of teams that could throw.

Jacob Eason threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns as Washington almost pulled off the win at home over the Ducks, and Anthony Gordon and Washington State almost won in Eugene last week with over 400 passing yards and three scores.

Kedon Slovis is getting better.

Ever since he missed the Washington game, he came back to hit 68% of his throws – he’s connecting on 72% so far on the year – with eight touchdowns and a pick in his last three games, rolling Colorado for 406 yards and four scores.

It’s hardly just about Slovis. The receiving corps is the best in the Pac-12, Slovis is able to spread the ball around and hit the big plays, and they should have time behind a line that’s doing just enough to make it all go.

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon might be finding ways to win lately, but it’s getting out barely alive.

It needed a late scrambled drive and a clutch kick to survive Washington State, and it needed a few late stops to put away Washington. Now it has to deal with a USC team that has a funky way of winning at home.

Utah is way better than the Trojans, but it couldn’t seem to handle the passing game in a loss in LA. It really does mean something that USC is 4-0 at home and 1-3 – and barely getting that one win over Colorado – on the road.

USC will get the defensive stops to go along with the big plays from the receiving corps to finish the drills that Washington and Wazzu couldn’t.

Everyone is waiting for the Trojans to lose so that Utah can take over the South already.

Not yet, if at all.
