Oregon (3-1) vs. Cal (4-1) Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

The defense continues to get the job done.

It’s not lockdown brick wall that doesn’t allow anything, but it’s got a great sense of timing, it has a fantastic pass rush, and it’s able to hold up well by getting behind the line and wreaking havoc.

This is Evan Weaver’s game.

The magnificent Cal linebacker made 14 tackles in last year’s loss to the Ducks, and he’s been hitting everything this year so far as one of the nation’s best defensive players. He came up with 22 stops against Ole Miss, hit Washington for 18 tackles, and against Oregon, it’s up to him and the linebacking corps to hold firm after not allowing four yards per carry against anyone so far.

Oregon’s running game has been hit-or-miss. It was stuffed by Auburn and Stanford, and the the offense overall struggled. It rolled against Nevada and Montana, and the offense was fantastic. Cal can keep this relatively low scoring and keep the offense in the game. It’ll have to, because …

Why Oregon Will Win

Starting QB Chase Garbers is out after getting hurt against Arizona State. That means former UCLA transfer Devon Modster has to step up and be far, far better than he was in the loss. He hit just 5-of-14 passes for 23 yards and a pick, and now he has to deal with a Duck defense that’s been fantastic so far.

Justin Herbert and the offense get all the love and credit, but the defense is No. 1 in the Pac-12 in total defense thanks to a killer pass rush that’s been living behind the line.

The constant pressure is there, and the sacks are steady with 14 in the last three games. Expect at least five against a leaky Bear offensive line that’s getting its quarterbacks popped.

On the other side, Herbert has yet to throw a pick. The Auburn loss took him off the national map, but he’s been every bit as good as all the big name passers across the college football landscape, hitting 74% of his throws with 14 touchdowns and no mistakes.

Even if he’s not perfect against this Cal D, he should be good enough to overcome any errors in a hurry.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

What’s Going To Happen

Cal is good enough defensively to keep this from going off the rails, but the Oregon defense that’s allowed just 15 points in the last three games will take over as the game goes on. Herbert and the Oregon offense won’t go off, but they’ll a few early scores will be enough to survive on.
