Oregon State (2-4) vs. Cal (4-2) Game Preview
Why Oregon State Will Win
The offense has been a whole bunch of fun … right up until it ran into Utah.
It’s not going off on the Cal defense, but it’s not going to make any big mistakes – it leads the nation in fewest turnovers with just two so far – and it’s gong against a team that’s not going to run away and hide with the game.
Utah has the offense to dominate in a blowout – like it did in the 52-7 win last week. Cal doesn’t.
The Bears can’t move the chains, they can’t run a lick, they can’t keep the offense moving, and they don’t win the field position battle because they can’t punt all that well.
Oregon State has to somehow get up fast. Jake Luton and the passing game have to hit hard right away with a few decent drives using the short-to-midrange passes at least control the clock, and they have to try to keep the field tilted. This isn’t a Bear team built to go on long marches.
Why Cal Will Win
The Cal defense has the potential to rise up and shut down the Beavers cold.
The Utah defensive front stuffed Oregon State’s ground attack with play after play behind the line while only allowing 48 yards and two yards per carry. Luton and the passing attack can keep things moving a wee bit, but the Bear secondary wins more than its share of battles to grind games down to a halt.
This is a rested team coming off a not-that-bad performance in a 17-7 loss to Oregon. With two weeks to recharge, the defense that has yet to allow more than 24 points this season shouldn’t be even more of a rock against the run.
On the other side, this is the game to get the running game going. the Bears haven’t been able to generate much of a push over the last several games, but again, the time off should matter. Oregon State’s defensive front can get shoved around.

What’s Going To Happen
The Cal defense will drop like a hammer.
Luton and the Oregon State offense will be careful with the ball, but that’s not going to be enough. The Cal running game will be too effective, and the defense will generate third down stop after third down stop.
It won’t be the Utah blowout for the Beavers, but it’ll be frustrating.
