Oklahoma State (4-3) vs. Iowa State (5-2) Game Preview
Why Oklahoma State Will Win
If you want a shootout – and Iowa State doesn’t seem to have any problems getting the offense going – Oklahoma State is the one team on the slate so far with the balance to provide a push.
The offense keeps on working.
The Cowboys might be in a bit of a freefall lately, but the ground game hasn’t taken any time off with Chub Hubbard up to almost 1,300 yards in his seven games with 15 scores.
He’s having to work very, very hard to keep it all going – 32 carries or more in four of the last five games – but QB Spencer Sanders continues to help the cause on the ground, even if the passing game is sputtering a bit.
Statistically, the Cyclone run defense has been solid, and there are plenty of plays in the backfield, but it hasn’t dealt with anyone who can crank up the production outside of TCU. No one has been able to control the tempo or pace of the game, and that’s where Oklahoma State comes in.
Why Iowa State Will Win
Defense has been optional so far at Oklahoma State.
The offense might have as much firepower as anyone in the conference, but the D can’t seem to come up with a meaningful stop, especially through the air. Baylor bombed away, Texas bombed away, Texas Tech dinked and dunked away, and everyone is fattening up the stat sheet against this group.
Brock Purdy will, too.
He continues to legitimately be in the race for the Big 12 Player of the Year – he’ll get his chance against Mr. Hurts’ Sooners in a few weeks – hitting 70% of his passes and coming off a 378-yard, three-score day against Texas Tech.
The Oklahoma State game last year was his debut, stepping in and bombing away for 318 yards and four scores. He’s got the O around him to do it all again, and the Cowboys don’t have the secondary to stop it.

What’s Going To Happen
Iowa State has been on a wonderful roll that won’t stop now. Purdy is going off, the defense is keeping everyone to around 24 points, and at home, it’s not going to buckle against the constant Oklahoma State offensive pressure. The Cowboys will hang around for a bit, but they won’t have the defense to slow down Purdy and company in the second half.
