Oklahoma (7-0) vs. Kansas State (4-2) Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Wildcats are doing a whole lot of things right.

There might not be a whole lot of explosion, and the defense has its issues, but the offense is phenomenal at staying on the field and controlling the clock, and the secondary is doing a fantastic job allowing a Big 12-low 153 yards per game. It’s a swarming group that can tackle and does a nice job of of limiting yards after catch.

That’s what Oklahoma is all about.

The Sooners might not turn the ball over and they make up for their mistakes with big plays, but they don’t take the ball away. In a game that should have limited possessions – at least compared to what OU is used to – any turnover will be huge. The Wildcats don’t give the ball away and they don’t get flagged enough to matter. On the flip side, Oklahoma is a penalty machine.

The deliberate style at home might just be enough to throw Jalen Hurts and company off of their rhythm. The Cats want the Sooners to press, and they’re not going to let the game get out of hand. Only one team – Baylor – has scored more than 26 points on this D. but …

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Oklahoma defense is fantastic on third downs.

The ball control style that relies on time of possession only works if the offense manages to win on third downs. Kansas State’s defense leads the Big 12 in third down D, but Oklahoma is second. The K-State O is just okay on third downs, and OU’s attack is a killer at moving the chains when it has to.

In the loss to Oklahoma State, Kansas State managed to convert just 8% of its third down tries. In the loss to Baylor, the Wildcats couldn’t handle the big plays. Expect the Sooners to be able to do a mix of both things.

As good as the Wildcat defense might be, it doesn’t get after the quarterback. That’s not necessarily a bad thing considering Jalen Hurts gets the ball out of his hands in a hurry, but if he doesn’t have to worry about being pressured, and if he gets time to find his second receiver, there’s a problem.

Even so, though …

What’s Going To Happen

The Kansas State secondary is for real.

It’s allowed just three touchdown passes on the year, no more than one scoring pass in any game, and it’s able to keep just about everything in front of the defensive backs. The problem is the offensive pop – K-State doesn’t have it.

Oklahoma’s offense will be kept under wraps just enough to make this interesting, but the defense will do its part and take over as the game goes. on. The chances will be there to take over the game with a good scoring drive, and the Wildcats won’t be able to do it.
