Notre Dame (5-2) vs. Virginia Tech (5-2) Game Preview
Why Notre Dame Will Win
To pull this off on the road, Virginia Tech has to do a little of everything right, and that includes winning the turnover battle.
Virginia Tech just doesn’t take the ball away.
The Hokie D came up with five turnovers in the win over Miami, and it forced two mistakes in the win over Furman, and that’s about it. There’s just one other takeaway in the other five games, including none in three of the last four games.
The Irish don’t come up with a whole slew of takeaways, either, but they’re also not screwing up.
More than that, coming off the Michigan game, the Irish should come into this fired up and a whole lot stronger than it was in the monsoon in Ann Arbor.
The running game was stuffed to a dead stop, but before that it was on a roll. Virginia Tech might be playing well against the run, and it’s not going to get gouged, but expect the Irish to be night-and-day more productive and keep control of the game. The Hokies are doing a whole lot of things right, but they’re not doing enough to come up with third down stops.
Ian Book will have a bounceback game and he should keep the offense moving, but …
Why Virginia Tech Will Win
The Hokie pass rush has been dangerous enough to be a bother.
Good early on in the year against the bad teams, the defense has stepped it up over the last three games with 15 sacks – this group crushed the Miami offensive line – and has to get to Book and bother him before he gets time to hit his downfield throws.
The run D hasn’t faced a whole slew of killers so far, but it held Boston College in check early on and hasn’t allowed more than 150 yards over the last three games. Part of that – at least statistically – has been because of the pass rush, but the line really has been better.
Offensively, QB Hendon Hooker is back after suffering a leg injury in the win over North Carolina. The offense has been smoother and found more of a spark after he took over for Ryan Willis, and now the running game has been working better.
There’s just enough pop to keep up if the Irish defense doesn’t get its groove back after the Michigan game. At the very least, the Hokies have to try powering the ball.

What’s Going To Happen
Virginia Tech has been forgotten about, but it might just be playing Clemson in the ACC Championship in a few weeks. It’s playing better, the defense has been good enough, and …
Notre Dame is going to come in angry and much, much sharper after what happened last week.
The Hokies are good enough to keep this relatively close, but they’ll be -2 in the turnover margin and they won’t be able to handle the Irish offensive balance in the second half.
