Minnesota (6-0) vs. Rutgers (1-5) Game Preview
Why Minnesota Will Win
The Rutgers offense has gone from bad to really, really bad. It was able to come up with more than 300 yards against Maryland – and only scored seven points.
It managed just 75 yards against Indiana last week, finishing with a mere one passing yard. Some of the key players on offense are done. The coaching change hasn’t gone well, and now the offense hasn’t been shut out in three of the last five games and with 23 points in those five.
Minnesota has finally kicked in its running game that struggled and sputtered so much over the first part of the season. Over the last two games? It hammered Illinois for 332 yards, and added 322 yards in the blowout over Nebraska last week.
Rutgers allowed 200 rushing yards or more in three of the last four games.
Why Rutgers Will Win
Will Minnesota be fully focused?
After destroying Nebraska and getting off to their 6-0 start, the Gophers are hearing about how this is a layup, and so is next week’s date with Maryland before the big showdown against Penn State.
This is still the team that struggled and survived against South Dakota State. It had a nightmare of a time putting against Fresno State, Georgia Southern, and Purdue, too.
It wasn’t until the second half against Illinois two weeks ago that the Gophers started to kick it in.
Do you believe in patterns? Rutgers do far has alternated between days with 300 yards of total offense and total duds. going 300+, dud, 300+, dud, and so on. It’s due for another 300+ yard game this week.

What’s Going To Happen
At some point, Rutgers is going to have one of those out-of-body-experience games when something just clicks. It won’t last for long, and it might be a one-shot deal, but this is still a Big Ten team with – technically – Big Ten players. That won’t happen this week against a Gopher team that will control the clock for at least 35 minutes, but at least the Scarlet Knights will score.
And they’ll finish with more than one passing yard.
