Minnesota (7-0) vs. Maryland (3-4) Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

The running game has figured it out.

It ripped apart Illinois and Nebraska for over 320 yards in back-to-back weeks, and it went through the motions against a sad Rutgers team last week with close to 200 yards and three scores. Now it gets to line up and blast away on a Maryland defensive front that’s been fine, but hardly special.

The only reason the Terp’s run D stats aren’t even worse is because of a pass defense that’s getting ripped to shreds.

Maryland isn’t playing LSU and Hawaii, it’s getting destroyed by Purdue, Indiana, and Penn State. Fine teams all, but they aren’t so good that they should all be rolling at will like they did against the Terp secondary that’s allowing over eight yards per throw.

Minnesota is running well, and it’s throwing deep even better, averaging close to 11 yards per throw with 16 touchdowns and just three passes with a nice mix of things happening. Everyone has to worry about the run now, Tanner Morgan is hitting his phenomenal receivers deep, and the O is clicking with confidence and competence. However …

Why Maryland Will Win

The Penn State game is next … the Penn State game is next … the Penn State game is next …

Minnesota is already a presumed 8-0 going into this week, it has the showdown of showdowns against the Nittany Lions coming, and …

It’s not like the Gophers have beaten anyone yet.

That’s not to say Maryland is anything great, but Minnesota’s best win so far is against … Nebraska? Purdue? Fresno State? This is a very good team, and going 7-0 is 7-0, but it’s hardly been a killer who’s blowing though the Ohio States and Wisconsins of the world so far.

Maryland has the running game to bother a Gopher defense that hasn’t had to worry about anyone grinding it out since dealing with the Georgia Southern option attack. Maryland has the O to push for 200 yards or more and average way over five yards per carry, and has the talent to crank up big plays in chunks.

The nice part about this for the Terps? There’s absolutely no pressure. The entire focus on this game is on Minnesota, because …

The Penn State game is next … the Penn State game is next … the Penn State game is next  …

What’s Going To Happen

This is where it all went wrong for the Gophers last season. They started out 3-0, and then Maryland went off in a 42-13 blasting.

Minnesota is good, and it’s playing great, but it’s not that good.

Maryland gets back QB Josh Jackson and RB Anthony McFarland after they missed the last few weeks, the pass rush is good enough to bother the Gopher backfield, and they have just enough in talent – even with all of the injuries on both sides – to pull off Illinois-over-Wisconsin Lite.

This is the week when the Maryland offense works, the Minnesota attack will misfire just enough to matter, and yeah, that one team has a massive date next week and the other has no expectations whatsoever really will matter.
