Michigan (4-1) vs. Illinois (2-3) Game Preview
Why Illinois Will Win
The Illini are way, way, way overdue to be on the right side of a few breaks – and start to make their own.
They have a decent running game, and the defense gets into the backfield enough to potentially be disruptive. What does the team do really, really right? It takes the ball away. It came up with two or more takeaways in four of the five games, and Michigan’s offense plays like it’s about to turn the ball over on every play.
106th in the nation in giveaways, Michigan has managed to turn it over 11 times so far and come very, very close to disaster on several other occasions. The running game is mediocre, the passing game isn’t consistent. and with the showdowns against Penn State and Notre Dame coming up next – and coming off the battle with Iowa – there’s a shot the team isn’t quite as sharp as it needs to be.
Michigan can’t afford to not be as sharp as it needs to be against anyone.
Why Michigan Will Win
The Illinois offense has several nice parts, and the running game isn’t all that bad, but the attack overall just doesn’t seem capable of moving the chains in key moments.
There’s no downfield passing game happening no matter how much the Illini try to push the issue. Accuracy has been a problem over the last three games, and most painful of all, the team is averaging fewer than four yards per attempts over the last two losses.
The Michigan secondary is going to crowd up and jump all over everything Illinois tries to do on short-to-midrange plays.
For all of the Wolverines’ concerns on the offensive side, the defense has been doing its job. It’s good at disrupting things behind the line, and it’s coming off a brilliant performance against Iowa’s Nate Stanley, who hadn’t thrown a pick all year until he gave three away last week.
No, Illinois won’t be passing the ball all that well.

What’s Going To Happen
Michigan has allowed three points in the last two games, and it’s about to come up with another big game to dump the Illini.
But the offense still won’t quite click like it should.
Michigan won’t have any problems getting up fast and holding the lead, but it’s not going to be able to put it away until the third quarter. That’s when Shea Patterson will get hot, Michigan will go on two straight scoring drives, and Illinois will suffer its fourth straight loss.
