Miami (3-4) vs. Pitt (5-2) Game Preview
Why Miami Will Win
So what’s going right in this shockingly underwhelming season?
The Hurricane defense continues to get into the backfield, the run defense is still fantastic – keeping teams to under 100 yards per game – and there’s still the effort and fight to keep games close.
Pitt isn’t the type of team that’s going to run away and hide with a 24-point first quarter – Miami should be in the game throughout just because the D will do its part. The Panther offense is the third-worst in the ACC in rushing, it’s the second-worst in scoring, and the Canes have to take care of their opportunities.
The offensive side might be struggling in several ways, but the running game got going a bit, averaging almost five yards per carry with freshman Cam’Ron Harris taking on a bigger roll with 136 yards last week in the loss to Georgia Tech.
Why Pitt Will Win
Does Miami have a quarterback?
Jarren Williams has been out with a shoulder injury, and N’Kosi Perry is iffy after playing against Georgia Tech with a separated shoulder. Is it Tate Martell time? Will there be a rotation of quarterbacks? As is, the Miami passing game is a struggle, and it just doesn’t have the continuity needed against a defense that’s just good enough when it has to be to get off the field.
It’ll be Perry and Martell is out, but still, he’s far, far less than 100%.
So Miami will try running the ball with Harris and company no matter who’s under center. There’s one big problem – Pitt leads the ACC against the run.
The defensive front leads the nation in sacks, it’s stuffing everyone’s ground game, and it’s pinning its ears back and living in the backfield time after time. No one has been able to run for 170 yards on this group, with Penn State rushing for a season-high 167 yards. It’s asking a lot for Miami with its leaky O line to do that.
So far, Pitt is 0-2 when it allows more than 125 yards, and 5-0 when it gives up fewer. The Canes have only come up with more than 100 yards twice.

What’s Going To Happen
The Canes might be fired up to save its season and try to do something right, and the defense will do its part to keep this close. The offense, though, will stall time after time agains the Pitt D that will spend at the better part of the afternoon jumping on the heads of the players in the Miami backfield.
It’s the first home game for the Panthers in the last three weeks, and it’s the first road game for the Hurricanes since September 7th.
