Kansas State (5-2) vs. Kansas (3-5) Game Preview
Why Kansas Will Win
The Jayhawks are playing well because the offense is versatile enough for figure things out on the fly.
Against Texas, the running game started working early on, and it kept on rolling on the way for 259 yards. Last week, Carter Stanley and the passing attack got going – after cranking up 310 yards and four scores against the Longhorns – with a few big throws late to get by Texas Tech.
Stanley is on, with well over 900 yards in his last three games with 13 touchdowns and a pick. He should have plenty of time against a Wildcat defense that’s good overall, but can’t get to the quarterback and isn’t anything special against the run.
Again, Kansas should be able to move the ball in a variety of ways. It would love to turn this into a bit of a shootout, with its ability to hit on its third down chances to go along with all of the explosive plays. Oklahoma was able to find its groove late against the Wildcats, but …
Why Kansas State Will Win
Kansas might never have the ball.
Kansas State is working its offense to near-perfection over the last few weeks by dominating the time of possession battles and owning third downs on defense.
Kansas is strong on the money downs, and it needs to nail them. Even though there isn’t much of a pass rush, the Wildcats are second in the nation on third downs allowing teams to convert just 25% of the time.
The Jayhawk offense might be producing, but it’s not consistent enough and it’s not necessarily effective enough to take over the game like it’ll need to. Drives and possessions will be at a premium, mainly because the KU defense won’t be able to handle the K-State ground attack.
QB Skylar Thompson led a running game that rolled for over 200 yards with six scores against Oklahoma, and now they get to go against a Kansas run defense that’s allowed over 200 yards in five of its last six games, and gave up 192 to West Virginia in the other.

What’s Going To Happen
Kansas will pull out all the stops in the always-interesting rivalry game, but Kansas State will have the ball for close to 40 minutes as it grinds out drive after drive. The Jayhawks won’t be able to generate enough takeaways to make a difference.
