Iowa (4-2) vs. Purdue (2-4) Game Preview
Why Purdue Will Win
Jack Plummer stepped up his game in the blowout win over Maryland.
It’s been a rough run for him and the Purdue offense over the last few weeks ever since a slew of key injuries struck the team, but he rose up and rocked against the Terps hitting 81% of his passes for 420 yards and three scores. He got time to work, he was accurate, and he showed he could make the O go.
Iowa’s defense might be doing an amazing job overall, but it’s still not getting into the backfield and it’s just not effective enough. The Purdue offensive front has had problems – there’s no running game – but it should be able to give Plummer enough opportunities to hit his midrange throws.
The Boilermakers have the Big Ten’s No. 1 passing game, and it has to unleash it.
Why Iowa Will Win
There really, really is no Purdue ground game for Iowa to worry about.
It’s partly because the passing game is too good and it’s too strong to not keep using, but there’s not even a commitment to the run. When Purdue runs it 30 times or more, it hits 100 yards, but it’s only done that twice so far.
Iowa is 4-0 so far when allowing fewer than 100 yards on the ground, and 0-2 when allows 100 yards or more. Even then, it’s not giving up a ton – no one is averaging more than five yards per carry so far.
The Hawkeye secondary has been a rock, too. Iowa State’s Brock Purdy is the only quarterback who’s hit the 200-yard mark against a pass defense that’s allowed just one touchdowns in the last three games.
The defense really is good, and it should be suffocating at home.

What’s Going To Happen
Iowa might be a wee bit banged up a down after losing to Michigan and Penn State, but there’s no time to mope. Those were two losses to Big Ten East teams – there’s still time to rally back in the Big Ten West chase.
It’s going to be another tough day from a Hawkeye D that’s been able to make good offenses look bad, and has yet to give up more than 17 points.
Purdue won’t be able to throw effectively enough, or control the game enough, to take advantage of its few chances to make a push on the road. Iowa QB Nate Stanley will bounce back from the last two weeks.
