Iowa (5-2) vs. Northwestern (1-5) Game Preview
Why Iowa Will Win
Northwestern really, really, really doesn’t score.
There’s just nothing there, and it’s not just because it had to play Michigan State, Wisconsin and Ohio State. The passing game is a mess, the running game is a mess, the offense is a mess.
The Wildcats has scored ten points or fewer in four of the six games, scored 15 against Wisconsin with a few late points when the game was so very over, and they rolled against UNLV.
It doesn’t matter who’s at quarterback, the offensive style isn’t working, there’s nothing happening down the field, and the passing game is the least efficient in college football with just two touchdown passes, ten picks, and averaging just four yards per throw.
The Iowa defense is tenth in the nation and is a rock against the run. Northwestern isn’t going to be able to run, and it isn’t going to be able to throw. That’s a problem.
Why Northwestern Will Win
It’s not like Iowa’s offense is any sort of a thrill ride.
Michigan and Penn State were able to keep the Hawkeye O from doing much of anything, and it didn’t exactly blow up against a bad Purdue defense last week.
It’s good at moving the chains and great at controlling the time of possession battle, but the ground game isn’t getting anything going and the passing game has just one touchdown throw and five picks over the last three games.
This is the type of team that fits what the Wildcats need. Iowa isn’t going to run away and hide with a big scoring burst, it’ll turn it over a few times, and it’ll want to keep the game slow and steady.
Northwestern needs to keep this within range, and then take advantage of every opportunity.

What’s Going To Happen
Bring a pillow and a blankey … this is going to be really, really boring for three quarters.
It’ll be a war to see who can try harder not to score, but it’ll be just close enough to be intense in the fourth. Northwestern will have chance after chance to make something big happen, and it won’t be able to do it. The Iowa defensive line will take over late, and the Wildcat passing game will continue to make the world sad, but at least it’ll be fast.
