Iowa State (3-2) vs. West Virginia (3-2) Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

Brock Purdy isn’t necessarily carrying the team, but he’s playing at a high enough level to be the difference-maker to add more pop to an offense that was okay under Matt Campbell, but is now even more dangerous.

Purdy ran for multiple touchdowns in two of the last three games – including 102 yards and two scores in the win over TCU last week – and he’s connecting on 71% of his passes with two or more touchdowns in every game but the loss to Iowa.

West Virginia’s offense was able to show up a bit against Texas last week, but it wasn’t enough. Overall, even with the 31 points and decent offensive explosion, the Mountaineers are still dead last among Big 12 teams rushing offense, downfield passing, and total offense.

The Cyclone D is playing just well enough to keep WVU from going off. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why West Virginia Will Win

As long as Austin Kendall isn’t screwing up, he’s showing off the ability to move the offense.

The four interceptions he gave away were a killer agains the Longhorns, but he also threw for 367 yards and three touchdowns as he started to push the ball down the field a little more.

The Iowa State secondary hasn’t been bad so far, but it also hasn’t dealt with anyone who cranked up the downfield passing game. Iowa’s Nate Stanley is the best quarterback the Cyclones have faced, and they’ve played a whole slew of dinkers and dunkers.

For West Virginia, what’s important are the takeaways – especially after last week – and Iowa State doesn’t come up with picks. It made two in the win over ULM, and that’s been about it.

The Mountaineers are going to have to take some chances, and they’re going to have to win the turnover battle.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State’s offense is playing too well, and West Virginia’s is too inconsistent. There’s not enough offensive balance, but the bigger problem will be a line that will struggle against the terrific Iowa State pass rush.

But West Virginia’s defense is good at getting behind the line, too. Unfortunately, the Cyclone offensive line is playing as well as any in the Big 12, and Purdy is doing too good a job of getting the ball out of his hands fast.

I’ll be a close, fun game, but Iowa State will come out on the right side of it with a bit more offensive crispness. It’ll be a fight, though.
