Indiana (4-2) vs. Maryland (3-3) Game Preview
Why Indiana Will Win
The Hoosiers are playing well.
Their offense has found a consistent scoring pop – scoring 31 for more against everyone but Ohio State – QB Michael Penix is playing like a potential star to build around, and the running game is good enough to get by.
The Terrapins are not playing well.
Outside of a blowout over a Rutgers team that’s getting destroyed by everyone who can field 11 people on the field at once, they’ve been awful. They didn’t show up for a showcase game against Penn State on national TV, they made Purdue look amazing last week, and QB Josh Jackson is still trying to get past an ankle injury.
Maryland’s secondary has been a disaster, allowing three touchdown passes in four of the last five games, and getting nailed for 420 yards or more in two of the last three.
Penix is about to have a whole lot of fun.
Why Maryland Will Win
Maryland is just flaky enough to come up with a big performance.
It’s got a good offensive scheme, it has a solid passing game that’s come up with 200 yards or more in four of the six games, and its defense is good at getting into the backfield. It only has one fumble so far, and it’s been able to force plant of mistakes.
For all the good that Indiana is doing, it’s not forcing takeaways, and it has yet to win the turnover margin.
For a team that scuffling like Maryland is, any takeaways are a must to turn the momentum around. The Terps have to be a +2 in turnover margin, it needs to get the running game going right away, and it’s possible – once in a while – to run on the Hoosiers.
IU is 0-2 so far when allowing 140 rushing yards or more, and Maryland has rushed for 161 yards or more against everyone but Penn State. But …

What’s Going To Happen
Maryland ran for 353 yards against Indiana last year … and lost.
It’s desperation time for a Terp team that needs something positive. Indiana has yet to beat anyone good – Ball State, Eastern Illinois, UConn and Rutgers are the four wins – and Maryland is about to come up with a decent performance at home.
It won’t be quite enough, the Hoosiers will do too much with their passing game, but it’ll be a fun and entertaining game that will come down to the IU offense being a wee bit sharper and doing a bit more to control the tempo.
