Georgia (5-0) vs. South Carolina (2-3) Game Preview

Why South Carolina Will Win

The Gamecocks have to pounce in a hurry.

Georgia hasn’t had too many problems outside of needing a late stop against Notre Dame, but this isn’t normally an Oklahoma or Ohio State that will step up and blow the doors off someone with a big burst. This is more of a rolling thunder sort of a team, and while it’s effective, it also leaves a few opportunities open.

The Gamecocks are getting a decent season out of their offensive line, and they’re doing a decent job of getting into the backfield from time to time. Somehow, they have to just keep this in range and hope to get a few big breaks.

Georgia will get hit with penalties – South Carolina leads the SEC with the fewest penalty yards – and it’s not too big on taking the ball away. The Gamecocks have talent the ball away at least twice in three of the last four games, and they have to do that again. They have to be at least a +2 in turnover margin.

Why Georgia Will Win

Again, this might not be the flashiest of Georgia teams, but it’s absolutely rock-solid on both lines.

The offensive line is playing as well as any in the country, it’s not allowing a thing behind the line – Georgia has given up a grand total of one sack so far – and the defense is clamping down when it has to.

No one has come up with more than 17 points on the Georgia defense, and it’s going to take something insane for South Carolina to push past that.

The Gamecocks can’t move the chains – they have a bad formula to face this Bulldog team.

To pull off the win, someone has to grind it out, control the clock, and then pounce when the chances are there. Notre Dame came close to doing that, but it didn’t come through at the end.

South Carolina is dead last in the SEC in time of possession, and it’s awful on third downs. There’s no downfield passing game to open things up.

What’s Going To Happen

Jake Fromm will have his typical sharp, strong game, and this week, the team will get up early. The Bulldogs will come up with two good scoring drives in the first quarter, and the defense will clamp down from there.

South Carolina will have a few moments when it looks like it’ll creep back in and make it a battle, but will fizzle. Like most Bulldog games, it’ll be a far, far more impressive performance than the scoreboard will indicate.
