Tuesday Question: Midseason Top Players, Coaches, Surprises, Disappointments, Playoff Picks

By

Tuesday Question: Who are the top players, coaches, surprises, disappointments and more of the college football midseason?

Q: The best college football storyline so far is …

Jeff Feyerer

@JeffFeyerer, CFN

Player of the Midseason: QB Jalen Hurts, Alabama
Coach of the Midseason: Ed Orgeron, LSU
Game of the Midseason: UCLA 67, Washington State 63
Biggest Surprise: Joe Burrow, Heisman Contender and Destroyer of Worlds
Biggest Disappointment: Michigan State. A whole offseason to get the offense healthy and on track and they’re…bleh
The College Football Playoff Four Teams Will Be: Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Clemson
The Heisman Winner Will Be: Jalen Hurts
One Big Takeaway: The new redshirt rule could lead to a college football tanking problem.
One Big Prediction: The Playoff Committee is going to have an easy time with four undefeated major conference teams standing at the end.

Pete Fiutak

@PeteFiutakCFN

Player of the Midseason: QB Jalen Hurts, Alabama
Coach of the Midseason: Paul Chryst, Wisconsin
Game of the Midseason: UCLA 67, Washington State 63. Clemson 21-20 over North Carolina is a close second
Biggest Surprise: That Wisconsin is THIS good. Being 6-0 isn’t a total shocker, but to be this flawless is amazing. Joe Burrow and the whole LSU offense thing is No. 1A on the list.
Biggest Disappointment: UCLA. What the hell is THAT?
The College Football Playoff Four Teams Will Be: Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oregon
The Heisman Winner Will Be: Hurts
One Big Takeaway: It’s been a blast. It’s not just Alabama, Clemson, and everyone else. There’s a real, live playoff chase going on.
One Big Prediction: We’re all going to have a massive argument for the No. 4 playoff spot between a 12-1 Pac-12 champion Oregon vs. 11-1 LSU that lost to Alabama vs. 12-1 Big 12 champion Oklahoma that gets stunned at Oklahoma State at the end of the regular season. The committee will side with the 12-win Power Five conference champion that lost late to Auburn.

Player of the Midseason: Joe Burrow. Jalen Hurts might have better stats, but Burrow has been the difference for an LSU team that needed a quarterback to make that offense dangerous enough to be a national player.

Coach of the Midseason: Ryan Day. Remember when Ohio State was expected to take a slide because Urban Meyer rode off into the sunset? Yeah, so far — not so much.

Game of the Midseason: Auburn’s win over Oregon. It was improbable and helped set the narrative of a bad Pac-12, while keeping the impression of the SEC as the king of college football conferences rolling right along.

Biggest Surprise: Minnesota. The team started off just getting by, but now the row boat has a motor and is skimming its way over the waves of the Big Ten.

Biggest Disappointment: Nebraska (only because I was never on the Michigan train). This team has a long way to go and the build won’t be as easy as many thought in Lincoln with Scott Frost showing up and all.

The College Football Playoff Four Teams Will Be: Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Clemson

The Heisman Winner Will Be: Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma. Just pencil in any quarterback running Lincoln Riley’s offense from here on out.

Your One Big Midseason Takeaway: College football is so top heavy. We’re seeing the same Power Five teams at the top of their respective conferences, and ultimately in the running for the College Football Playoff. It doesn’t look like that’s going to change this year unless teams like Wisconsin or LSU can breakthrough in the Big Ten and SEC.

Your One Big Prediction For The Second Half:  I know this is vague, but someone will get left out of the College Football Playoff once again despite having a similar resume as the last team or two to get in. College Football Playoff expansion talk will heat up again and there will be real efforts to change things instead of the chatter we’ve heard so far.

Player of the Midseason: Joe Burrow
Coach of the Midseason: Mario Cristobal
Game of the Midseason: UCLA 67, Washington State 63
Midseason Biggest Surprise: Wisconsin
Midseason Biggest Disappointment: Nebraska
The College Football Playoff Four Teams Will Be: Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson and Oklahoma
The Heisman Winner Will Be: Joe Burrow
Your One Big Midseason Takeaway: We still don’t know anything about anyone except the Top 5 teams.
Your One Big Prediction For The Second Half: USC comes back down to earth, Clay Helton is fired.

Will Hunter

@wil__hunter, SpartansWire.com

Player of the Midseason: Jalen Hurts
Coach of the Midseason: Joe Brady (LSU’s passing game coordinator) and Orgeron for hiring him
Game of the Midseason: Tulane 38, Houston 31
Midseason Biggest Surprise: It’s gotta be the LSU offense, right?
Midseason Biggest Disappointment: The two big schools in Michigan
The College Football Playoff Four Teams Will Be: LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, Oklahoma
The Heisman Winner Will Be: Jalen Hurts
Your One Big Midseason Takeaway: This is potentially the best QB class we’ve ever seen. Depending on who declares, there could be seven QBs up for discussion as first round picks.
Your One Big Prediction For The Second Half: Alabama misses the playoff for the first time ever.

Jeremy Mauss

@MWCWire,MWwire.com

Player of the Midseason: Joe Burrow, LSU, QB
Coach of the Midseason: Sonny Dykes, SMU
Game of the Midseason: UCLA 67, Washington State 63
Midseason Biggest Surprise: The Mountain West just going in and knocking around Power Five teams. The league had nine wins in non-conference competition vs. P5 opponents and that was the most by any conference.
Midseason Biggest Disappointment: Everyone who fell for the trap that Nebraska and Michigan would be good. Specifically, the Wolverines being in the playoff discussion.
The College Football Playoff Four Teams Will Be: LSU, Alabama, Clemson, Wisconsin
The Heisman Winner Will Be: Joe Burrow, LSU, QB
Your One Big Midseason Takeaway: LSU’s offense finally having an offense and an elite quarterback in Joe Burrow
Your One Big Prediction For The Second Half: The championship game will be LSU vs. Wisconsin

Nick Shepkowski

@Shep670, CFN Podcast
Player of the Midseason: Jonathan Taylor
Coach of the Midseason: Luke Fickell
Game of the Midseason: UCLA 67, Washington State 63
Midseason Biggest Surprise: Minnesota
Midseason Biggest Disappointment: Michigan State
The College Football Playoff Four Teams Will Be: Clemson, LSU, Ohio State and Oklahoma
The Heisman Winner Will Be: Joe Burrow
Your One Big Midseason Takeaway: transfer rule has made for an infinitely more interesting 2019 than we could have ever hoped for
Your One Big Prediction For The Second Half: LSU hangs a 42 spot at Bama and ends up winning the SEC.

Scott Steehn

@Steehnroller, WinnersandWhiners.com

Player of the Midseason: Jonathan Taylor.

He won’t win the Heisman because he’s not a QB, but no player on an elite team has been more valuable than Taylor.

Coach of the Midseason: Ryan Day

No coach had bigger shoes to fill or more eyes on them. And no coach has had their team more prepared every week than Day.

Game of the Midseason: UCLA 67 Wash St 63

Bruins were down 49-17 with under 7 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. 13.5 minutes later, they had 60 points…and the lead.

Midseason Biggest Surprise: Wisconsin’s dominance

Midseason Biggest Disappointment: Football in the state of New Mexico. How about no more Aggies or Lobos primetime games, mmkay?

The College Football Playoff Four Teams Will Be: Bama, Clemson, Wisconsin, and Oklahoma.

The Heisman Winner Will Be: Jalen Hurts

Your One Big Midseason Takeaway: The top-tier of Group of 5 schools are officially better than the bottom third of most Power-5 conferences.

Your One Big Prediction For The Second Half: Wisconsin and Ohio St split their games but Badgers clip the Buckeyes in the last poll and Ohio St is left outside yet again.

Big Game Ben Niewoehner

Player of Midseason: Jonathan Taylor
Coach of Midseason: Ed Orgeron
Game of Midseason: Washington State vs UCLA
Midseason Biggest Surprise: Minnesota
Midseason Biggest Disappointment: Syracuse
The College Football Playoff Four Teams Will Be: Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, Oklahoma
Heisman Winner: Jalen Hurts
Your One Big Midseason Takeaway: : Ohio State did not need Urban Meyer.
Your One Big Prediction For The Second Half: App State runs table, gets the group of five New Years bowl game slot.

Joe Williams

@JoeWilliamsVI, SportsBookWire.com

Player of the Midseason: Jalen Hurts
Coach of the Midseason: Ryan Day
Game of the Midseason: UCLA 67, Washington State 63
Midseason Biggest Surprise: SMU
Midseason Biggest Disappointment: Miami-Florida
The College Football Playoff Four Teams Will Be: Clemson, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma
The Heisman Winner Will Be: Jalen Hurts
Your One Big Midseason Takeaway: Michigan is the most overrated team…again.
Your One Big Prediction For The Second Half: Alabama will lose to LSU…and won’t make the CFB playoff.
