Clemson (7-0) vs. Boston College (4-3) Game Preview

Why Boston College Will Win

AJ Dillon belongs in the Heisman chase.

If the award went to the nation’s most valuable player, good luck at finding anyone who means more to a team that Dillon, who’s carrying the offense that lost QB Anthony Brown for the year and doesn’t have a passing game to take the pressure off.

With everyone focusing on stopping Dillon, he ran 34 times for 223 yards and three scores against NC State last week for his fifth-straight 100-yard game.

Clemson’s run defense has been terrific – it hasn’t allowed more than one rushing score in a game and is giving up just three yards per carry – no one has the ground attack and talent to do what BC is able to do with Dillon.

It’s not just about committing to the running game – Louisville tried that last week and Georgia Tech ran 45 times in the opener – it’s about controlling the game and making things happen. Dillon – who was held to 39 yards in last year’s loss and 57 as a freshman – has to go off.

However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Clemson Will Win

For the running game to be good enough to beat a team like Clemson – and there aren’t many of those – everything else has to fall into place. The opponent has to dominate the time of possession battle, and it has to own third downs.

Boston College’s offense is great on the money plays, but it’s not even remotely close to slowing down anyone’s offense on third downs. The Eagles are dead last in the ACC in third down stops, and they don’t do a thing to control the clock.

This isn’t your normal Boston College team. The defense hasn’t shown up, there’s no pass rush, and the run defense can be beaten up.

For all of the screaming and yelling about Trevor Lawrence not checking down enough, playing hero ball, and taking too many chances, he has still thrown three touchdown passes in his last two games and the offense is rolling at will …

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Clemson, It’s going to be okay.

It might not be the quite as sharp overall as it needs to be, and it might still be tweaking and adjusting to get the defense up to national championship snuff, but it’s still really, really, really good.

Dillon will get bottled up, there won’t be a BC passing game to make up for it, and the Clemson running game that’s been ramping it up will push for close to 300 yards for the third game in a row.

And that Lawrence guy will be okay, too.
