Baylor (4-0) vs. Kansas State (3-1) Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

Can Baylor some get the running game going on Kansas State?

The Bears don’t have a back like Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard – who ran for 296 yards last week in the win over K-State – but they have a nice group of runners who can combine to carry the load against a D giving up close to 200 rushing yards per game.

This isn’t your high-flying BU team of the Art Briles era – it’s starting to fit what Matt Rhule wants.

Strong defense – the Bears have yet to allow more than 21 points – great pass rush, move the chains, limited mistakes. Charlie Brewer has yet to throw an interception, hitting 66% of his passes with ten scores with two straight 300-yard passing games.

This is one of the teams on the Big 12 slate that fits to battle what Kansas State likes to do.

Why Kansas State Will Win

Baylor has been living off of keeping things moving on third downs, but Kansas State is third in the nation in third down stops, allowing teams to convert on just 20% of their chances.

There’s no pass rush, and again, the run defense is an issue, but overall the system is working. The Wildcats lead the Big 12 in turnover margin, they’re dominating the time of possession battle, and they’re getting a good start out of the running backs – even if it slowed down over the last two weeks once the schedule ramped up.

This is the game for the passing attack to start to work. Skylar Thompson has to be sharp against Baylor D that will fully focus on slowing down the ground attack. He can’t go 11-of-23 like he did last week, and he has to start pushing the ball down the field a little bit more.

However, this should be more of a grind-it-out game that’s all about time of possession and taking advantage of opportunities. Kansas State does that better than Baylor.

What’s Going To Happen

Be shocked if this is a high-flying offensive fun fest.

Kansas State will pull this off at home by doing what Baylor wants to do, only a little bit better. Unlike last week against Oklahoma State, the Wildcats will be far stronger on third downs, and they’ll do just enough to take advantage of two key takeaways to get by in a battle.
