Arizona (3-1) vs. Colorado (3-1) Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

Forgetting the concerns in the backfield for the moment, the defense is picking up the slack when the offense isn’t rolling.

The Wildcats aren’t all that consistent offensively. They were able to get the ground game rolling for the first few games, and then with QB Khalil Tate and RB JJ Taylor both out, Grant Gunnell stepped in and was terrific. He fired away in the win over UCLA, throwing for 352 yards without giving away a pick. Now the Wildcats know they’re fine no matter who’s under center.

The Colorado defense has been hammered for close to 300 yards per game – allowing two touchdown passes or more in each of the four – and Arizona should be able to do that with Gunnell or Tate.

Tate and Taylor are still questionable, but the defense was able to hold firm even when the UCLA running game was working. This isn’t a killer D that will stuff anyone cold, but it should be able to keep the mediocre Colorado ground game in check, and it should get just enough help from the offense that’s been able to slug it out when needed, and fire away, too.

Why Colorado Will Win

Mel Tucker’s defense might be just okay so far, but the offense is making up for the issues.

Steven Montez has been fantastic. He overcame a mediocre day against Air Force to be brilliant against the nasty Arizona State defense, throwing for 337 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

The ground game has been solid, with the 1-2 punch of Alex Fontenot and Jaren Mangham balancing things out while the loaded receiving corps has been as explosive as expected.

This is a rested team with a few weeks off to gear up for what’s coming. It’s No. 1 among Pac-12 teams in turnover margin, it’s got the explosion to hit the mediocre Arizona secondary, and it has the potential to make this a signature game – even bigger than the Nebraska win – for the Tucker era early in the season.

What’s Going To Happen

Away form home against a Colorado team with two weeks off, Arizona will still be good and will still make this a battle, but it won’t quite be able to pull off a win in the fun battle.

The Buff passing game will be sharper than Texas Tech’s was against the Wildcats, and it’ll be able to hit the 300-yard mark. Get ready to have some fun watching the two teams at the top of the Pac-12 South leader board go at it.
