Alabama (5-0) vs. Texas A&M (3-2) Game Preview

Why Texas A&M Will Win

The slow-and-go style can potentially slow down what the Crimson Tide want to do. Granted, Bama scores in lightning strikes, but the Aggies have just enough of a defense to stop that from happening early on.

The Aggie pass rush isn’t great when it comes to generating multiple sacks, but the D is good at generating pressure and terrific at getting off the field. This can’t be a shootout – A&M has to drag Bama down into the muck.

Control third downs, hold the ball for 35 minutes, and keep the midrange passes from turning into long touchdowns. A&M can do that – it was able to keep the Clemson game from getting out of hand and managed to battle a bit with Auburn – but this only works if Kellen Mond is on.

This is the junior’s third game against Alabama, and this time around, his job will be to hit the throws that are there. He misfired early on against Clemson, and the offense never got into a groove. He threw for 335 yards and two scores against Auburn, but he didn’t do enough to hit the big plays needed to take over.

Alabama’s defense is still amazing, but it doesn’t have too much of a pass rush to worry about, and it’ll give up third down tries and a few yards here and there. If Mond is on, and if the A&M style can take Bama out of its groove, there’s a chance to make this a fight.

Why Alabama Will Win

Nothing is stopping the machine.

Again, here’s sort of the problem with Texas A&M’s style. It’ll control the clock and the tempo, go on a decent drive, and maybe it’ll come up with a field goal, or maybe just stall just past midfield and play for field position, and then … FOOOOOOOOOM.

On Tua Tagovailoa strike to any one of his NFL receivers, and that’s it. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Tagovailoa has a total mastery of the attack with 23 touchdown passes and no picks, averaging close to 12 yards per pass and hitting on 76% of his throws. Texas A&M has the big, tough corners that can jam the Tide receivers just enough to throw disrupt some of them, but not all.

A&M needs everything to go right. but that’s a problem with a defense that doesn’t take the ball away enough. Bama just isn’t giving anyone anything to work with, only turning the ball over three times and appearing to feel challenged to make absolutely certain that there’s no slips.

It’s possible to stop the Tide for a little while, but A&M doesn’t have the defensive punch or the talent across the board to be disruptive enough to pitch a perfect game.

What’s Going To Happen

A&M’s style actually will work – to a point.

Alabama won’t be able to run away and hide with the game, but it’ll get up early and keep the pressure on by not only mixing things up a bit with its offensive balance, but by taking away any sort of an A&M running game, too.

Mond will be okay, but he won’t be transcendent-great. A&M needs him to be transcendent-great.
