Wisconsin (3-0) vs. Northwestern (1-2) Game Preview
Why Northwestern Will Win
You’ll have to forgive Wisconsin fans if they’re a wee bit skeptical.
The performance over Michigan was phenomenal, but the 2014 Wisconsin team was amazing, too, on the way to play in the Big Ten Championship. But it lost to Northwestern when it couldn’t stop screwing up.
The 2015 team was a killer, too, getting on a roll over the second half of the season, and it couldn’t stop meeting up again, losing 13-7 at home to the Cats.
After two straight tight wins in the series, the Badgers couldn’t stop fumbling and messing up in last year’s 31-17 loss that wasn’t anywhere near as close as the final score.
At some point, Northwestern is going to go Northwestern. There’s too much experience, too much defensive talent, and the coaching and track record are too strong to be as mediocre as it has looked in its 1-2 start. But there’s one key issue right now with Pat Fitzgerald’s team …
Why Wisconsin Will Win
Northwestern is AWFUL.
To be fair, the Michigan State defense is killing everyone right now, but teams are going off on the struggling Stanford D, and the Wildcats couldn’t do anything against it.
UNLV’s defense is lousy, and it was a struggle for the Cats to get anything going.
So far, Northwestern’s passing game is the least efficient in college football, hitting 48% of its throws with one touchdown pass and six picks. Wisconsin? It’s No. 1 in the nation in pass efficiency defense.
The offensive line destroyed Michigan last week, helping the Badgers keep the ball for almost 25 minutes in the first half. This is a finely tuned machine after three games, turning it over just two times, getting hit with just 14 flags, and with a. defense that’s tops in the nation in points allowed.
As long as the Badgers don’t start giving up turnovers in bunches – again, that’s been an issue in the series over the last few decades – they should be able to pound away, let Jonathan Taylor run, and have a relatively drama-free game.
What’s Going To Happen
The record over the last 12 meetings is 6-6. There’s no way a Northwestern-Wisconsin game can be easy, can it?
These are always physical, screwy games with Fitzgerald and his coaching staff able to come up with some Jedi mind trick on That Team Up Northwest.
Expect a bit of a hangover after the Michigan thumping, but this is going to be the Jack Coan redemption game. He got his first start last year against Northwestern after Alex Hornibrook was out hurt, and while he was fine, it wasn’t a great day.
This won’t be the razor-sharp Badger team of the first three weeks, but it won’t have to be.
