Wisconsin (1-0) vs. Central Michigan (1-0) Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

It wasn’t a perfect performance in the opening of the Jim McElwain era, but a big first half helped CMU get past Albany in a 38-21 victory. There’s just enough offensive talent to potentially give the Badgers a few problems, but the passing game has to get hot right away.

Jonathan Ward ran for 158 yards and two scores, but Quinten Dormady – the former Houston and Tennessee quarterback – was the main man with 285 yards and three scores. He has to be sharp from the start, but the key is going to be the other side of the ball.

The CMU defensive front not only has to hold up, but it has to get into the backfield against a Wisconsin offensive front that was way too leaky against USF. However …

Why Wisconsin Will Win

The Badger offense was totally and completely dominant against a decent USF defensive front. It was a brilliantly brutal effort in Tampa, coming up with a shutout against a Bull offense that couldn’t keep the chains moving – dropped passes had something to do with that – but it was the other side of the ball that took over right away.

The rebuilding offensive front allowed a few too many tackles for loss, but it gave Jonathan Taylor a little room, and he took advantage of the opportunity with 135 yards and two scores, and two catches for two more touchdowns.

More importantly going forward, the passing game clicked – Jack Coan hit 19-of-26 passes with no mistakes. Central Michigan’s rebuilt secondary that had problems against Albany will have a nightmare of a time on third downs.

What’s Going To Happen

This looked and played more like Wisconsin team that was so good in 2017 and didn’t show up last season. The offense might not be razor-sharp out of the gate, but the defense won’t allow a thing against the run, and the dam will break with a few big drives in the second quarter.

Taylor is the focus, but watch out for Coan and the passing game to be the key to turning this into an ugly blowout – CMU won’t do much to get into the backfield.
