Wake Forest (4-0) vs. Boston College (3-1) Game Preview
Why Wake Forest Will Win
The offense is humming.
There’s no quarterback in the ACC playing better than Jamie Newman, and that includes the 2020 No. 1 overall draft pick over at Clemson. The junior has rushed for three scores, hit 71% of his passes, and has throw for 300 yards or more in three of his four games with 12 scores.
The Boston College pass defense that just got hit for 304 yards by Rutgers is in trouble.
The Eagle pass rush isn’t there, but the secondary has picked off seven passes so far. It’s feast-or-famine – BC gives up a ton of yards, but it’ll make big plays against quarterbacks who aren’t careful.
At the moment, Newman is in total command of the attack.
On the other side, BC’s passing game isn’t doing enough. It’s had a few decent moments, and it’s not screwing up, but Anthony Brown is only hitting 54% of his passes.
It’ll be a tough time for the Eagles to keep up the pace if the scoring starts rolling, but …
Why Boston College Will Win
The Eagles should be able to hammer away on the ground.
Statistically, Wake Forest is doing a decent job against the run – no one has been able to find a groove with the Demon Deacon offense setting too fast a pace – but the Eagles are running 47 times or more in ever game around AJ Dillon, who already has 468 yards and six scores.
Wake Forest is doing a nice job of not losing a slew of turnovers, but no one is better on the turnover side than BC. The Eagles lead the nation in fewest giveaways with just one so far, and it leads the nation in turnover margin.
No, Newman isn’t throwing a ton of picks, but the Eagles are getting around the ball and making big plays. The have to come up with at least two turnovers and have to slow down the Demon Deacon attack, but …
What’s Going To Happen
The problem for BC – even at home – is that there’s a bad mix against a team like Wake Forest. There’s a good pace, but no passing game. There’s a great ground attack, but no control over the clock. On the other side, Wake Forest strikes quickly, but it can go on long marches, too.
Boston College couldn’t handle the Kansas offense, and Rutgers was able to bomb away last week. Wake Forest’s offense should be able to do just enough to overcome a massive day from Dillon and the BC ground game.
