Virginia (1-0) vs. William & Mary (1-0) Game Preview
Why William & Mary Will Win
The Tribe got the running game going in the 30-17 win over Lafayette, getting a nice day out of Hollis Mathis on the way to 265 rushing yards as a team. The ability is there to potentially control the clock at least a little bit if the Virginia defense doesn’t have the intensity.
The key will be the takeaways. The D came up with four in the win over the Leopards, and it’s going to need to force at least that many to keep it close.
Virginia cranked it up against Pitt to start the season, and it has a showdown against Florida State to follow – the focus isn’t going to be there to get by what’s supposed to be a scrimmage. However …
Why Virginia Will Win
The Cavaliers were almost perfect defensively against Pitt.
The defensive line that was ripped apart by the Panthers last year held up and allowed just 78 rushing yards and a score. William & Mary doesn’t have the parts to the passing game to pick up the slack if the ground game isn’t working this week.
More importantly, Virginia isn’t going to give away the big mistakes. It didn’t turn the ball over and way only penalized three times against the Panthers.
What’s Going To Happen
Virginia’s defense will shut down the William & Mary offense down to a dead stop, and the O will go through the motions in an efficient game with steady production for all four quarters to win with ease. The goal is to get QB Bryce Perkins on the sidelines as soon as possible, and he’ll be able to come out by the third quarter.
