Virginia Tech (1-1) vs. Furman (1-1) Game Preview
Why Furman Will Win
Virginia Tech was okay against Old Dominion, but it continues to have to work way, way, way too hard.
Ryan Willis and the passing game were solid against the Monarchs, and a slew of bit plays were there, but overall, the offense can’t stop screwing up.
Moving the ball hasn’t been a problem, but there’s no rushing offense, and most of all in this game for the Paladins, the turnovers are flowing. The Hokies have given the ball away seven times so far.
Furman? It has only give away one turnover so far.
There’s enough to the Furman offense to throw a big scare into the Hokies if the turnover margin is big enough. The Paladins will be able to run a bit, and Darren Grainger is a dangerous all-around quarterback who gave Georgia State a nightmare of a time in last week’s 48-42 loss. If the Hokie run defense doesn’t show up from the start, this could be way too close.
Why Virginia Tech Will Win
Georgia State’s offense went off on the Furman defense.
The Panthers might just be that good, and the win over Tennessee might not have been a fluke, but Dan Ellington was able to rip up the Paladins for 362 yards and five scores through the air, and the ground attack went for over 200 yards.
As long as Virginia Tech can stop giving the ball away and stop screwing up, it should be able to get by with a ramped up offense with a passing game getting the job done.
No, this hasn’t been the strong Virginia Tech team many were hoping would bounce back after a down 2018, but there’s still a whole lot of talent on both sides of the ball to beat an FCS team. Furman’s offense should work, but …

What’s Going To Happen
When needed, the Hokie defensive front will get into the backfield and come up with the sack to halt a big late drive. The Paladins are dangerous enough to pull off the upset – Virginia Tech just isn’t sharp enough to assume a layup – but they’ll come up just short. Hokie fans are in need of an easy afternoon and a blowout win, and they’re not going to get it.
