Utah (3-1) vs. Washington State (3-1) Game Preview
Why Utah Will Win
Is that the real Washington State? The Cougars might be a whole lot of fun, but they haven’t played anyone with any sort of a track record. The only game so far against anyone who has won a game against an FBS team? Last week’s loss to UCLA.
The pass defense was lit up by Dorian Thompson-Robinson and the Bruin attack in the epic 67-63 defeat, but it’s possible to run on this D. Northern Colorado was able to do it, and so was Houston – both hit the 200-yard mark – but no one has tried to power the ball yet. That’s going to be Utah.
Even with the injuries in the backfield, the Utes should be able to run the ball and do a good job of controlling the clock and the game. No one on the Wazzu schedule so far cares too much about time of possession, but Utah is averaging over 35 minutes per game.
Washington State hasn’t dealt with power, and it hasn’t faced a defensive front like Utah is going to bring – there’s little to no Cougar running game so far. There’s a reason …
Why Washington State Will Win
Anthony Gordon has been amazing.
The Cougar quarterback threw for 570 yards and nine touchdowns in the loss to UCLA – it wasn’t his fault the team couldn’t get the job done. He’s hitting 75% of his passes averaging over ten yards per pass with 21 scores and four picks. The Utes couldn’t handle Matt Fink in last week’s loss to USC, and now they’re about to get hit harder.
The Utah defense might be nasty, and the offensive parts are there overall, but star RB Zack Moss is banged up with a shoulder injury, and QB Tyler Huntley has an apparent foot problem.
Jason Shelley is a veteran quarterback who saw time last year when Huntley was out, and there’s depth among the Ute running backs, but they have to be ready for a possible shootout.
This is a good, sound, tough Ute team, but it’s also the one team in the Pac-12 that’s having the same sort of penalty problems as Wazzu, getting hit for 8.75 yards and 75 yards per game. The Cougars are getting flagged eight times per game.
What’s Going To Happen
The Utes will rally back from last week’s loss to USC and take control right away with the offensive front.
Washington State will come up with enough through the air to provide a push, but with the injuries in the backfield, the Utes will rotate the backs to pound and pound some more, control the clock, and keep Gordon off the field.
It’ll be a grinding game for Utah, and it’ll be a good-enough performance from the secondary.
