Utah (3-0) vs. USC (2-1) Game Preview

Why Utah Will Win

And there’s the USC offense we all thought we were getting against Stanford.

It wasn’t bad against BYU, but the three interceptions from Kedon Slovis were a killer, and the running game wasn’t enough to pick up the slack on the road. It’s not going to be enough to get by the Utes, either.

No, it’s not as simplistic as Utah beat BYU 30-12 and USC just lost to the Cougars by three in overtime, but the Utes were able to pound away for 262 yards and over 5.6 yards per carry in Provo. The Trojans were held to under four yards per pop.

The Utah offensive line has been flawless so far. It hasn’t allowed a sack, has given up just nine tackles for loss, and it’s giving the backfield all the time it needs to operate. USC has a pass rush, but it’s not enough of one to screw up what the Utes want to do.

USC needs to be close to perfect, but the offense has turned the ball over 11 times so far. Utah? One giveaway.

Why USC Will Win

You want to go against history?

1916. Utah opened up up the season with a 27-12 win over a USC program that wasn’t quite a real college football team. Since then, Utah has gone to play the Trojans seven times in Los Angeles and is 0-7 in the process.

Make it 0-8 if you want to count Anaheim in your 1993 Freedom Bowl.

USC has so far been fine at home. It was able to survive against a nasty Fresno State team, and it win a surprising shootout as Kedon Slovis emerged as a new star. But to get by the Cardinal, the USC lines were able to hold their own and did a great job stuffing the ground game.

Against Utah, Step One is stopping Zack Moss and making Utah get hot through the air early on. Yes, the Utah offensive line has been great, but it hasn’t had to deal with a whole lot of drama or stress so far. USC can apply the pressure.

The Trojans have the talent on the defensive front to get to Moss, it has the ability to control the clock a bit against a team that lives for dominating the time of possession battle, and it has the desperation of a team that has to get over last week’s late collapse and keep the Clay Helton era alive.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

What’s Going To Happen

90 rushing yards as a freshman in 2016. 141 yards averaging seven yards per pop as a sophomore. 140 yards and 5.6 yards per carry in the win as a junior. Zack Moss has been fantastic against USC in his three years in the series, and this has to be his game to take over from the start.

Utah’s defense isn’t going to allow a thing from the Trojan ground game, but it’s going to be a grinding fight that will come down to the big mistakes at the wrong times. USC will make them, and Utah won’t.

And Moss will be a workhorse with over 100 yards.

Go ahead and go against history.
