USC (3-1) vs. Washington (3-1) Game Preview
Why USC Will Win
The Trojans aren’t getting enough credit or respect for their play on the lines.
The passing game and the play of the cavalcade of quarterbacks have been the story, but the Trojans were able to pull off the win despite getting outplayed on the lines. Even though there wasn’t any running game, and even with the run D having issues, the team was able to survive.
Overall, the offensive front isn’t allowing too much happening in the backfield, and it’s doing just enough to give the quarterbacks time to work.
Fine … so two quarterbacks have already been knocked out hurt, so the line hasn’t been completely clean, but it’s only allowed five sacks so far. It doesn’t matter who’s at quarterback – it’s all working.
JT Daniels, Kedon Slovis, and now Matt Fink have combined to hit over 75% of their passes averaging over nine yards per pass with nine touchdowns. Michael Pittman, Tyler Vaughns, and the receiving corps have been amazing at picking things up when the quarterbacks are going down, but …
Why Washington Will Win
There’s absolutely no USC running game for the Huskies to worry about.
Even when it’s been working, it’s been just okay, and then last week it was stuffed to a dead stop by the Utah defensive front. Cal was able to pound away a wee bit on the Dawgs, but for the most part the interior will win its share of battles. To lose this, it’s going to take the USC passing attack to keep it going.
That’s going to be an issue.
Washington gave up yards to Hawaii and BYU, but on the season it’s only allowed three touchdown passes spread out over the four games and it’s not getting hit for much of anything happening down the field. Yeah, USC’s quarterbacks are playing well, but the Huskies got a week to prepare for Matt Fink. They’re going to bring the pressure.
Overall, this is a tough, methodical Washington team that’s not messing around with the mediocre. The Cal defense gave the offense problems, but Hawaii and BYU couldn’t handle the efficiency and toughness of the UW attack. It also helps that …
What’s Going To Happen
Jacob Eason is playing really, really well. Blow off the loss to Cal – that defense is the truth – he has been deadly, including a 24-of-28 performance against BYU.
Nah, it’s not as simple as USC lost to BYU, and Washington blasted BYU 45-19 last week, but it’s not far off. It might be as easy as USC is a different team at home than it will be on the road, but it’s more like the team is about to face a team that’s going to keep quietly building back up its resumé.
