USC (2-0) vs. BYU (1-1) Game Preview
Why USC Will Win
Is Kedon Slovis the real deal?
In one of the biggest shockers of the early part of the season, USC’s freshman passer stepped in against Stanford’s tough defense and he was deadly accurate, completing 28-of-33 passes for 377 yards and three touchdowns.
He was good, the USC receiving corps was great, and the team showed off the offensive explosion missing for long stretches last season. Almost as impressive was a run defense the locked up the Cardinal ground attack throughout the game, giving up one big run – 44 of the 98 yards came on one play.
The BYU running game went nowhere against Utah, and it wasn’t a positive against Tennessee. It’s not going to get it going against this Trojan D that went way-young last year, and is now seeing it pay off – seven of the top eight tacklers are underclassmen.
Why BYU Will Win
Just how much do you believe that Slovis can do this again?
He appears to be a good one to build around, but for most of the offseason he was a fourth-string option. Now, he’s going to be the focus of a Cougar defense that has more of a pass rush than it showed so far, and it’s got a terrific secondary that’s been decent from the start.
Even against two Power Five schools to kick things off, the Cougars have been able to hold their own on third downs. Utah and Tennessee combined to convert fewer than 30% of their chances, and that has to keep going by bothering Slovis.
On the other side, Cougar QB Zach Wilson has been okay so far, but he hasn’t busted out yet. He’s a dangerous, accurate playmaker with good mobility in the open field. The first two quarterbacks USC has faced so far were newbies – Wilson has just enough experience to be a problem.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s only the third time these two have played – USC won both games in 2003 and 2004.
BYU’s lines will hold up at home and keep the the Trojans from running away with this like they did against Stanford. but there won’t be enough offensive punch. Slovis won’t be as sharp as he was in his debut, but he won’t have to be – the running game will pick him up.
