Texas Tech (1-0) vs. UTEP (1-0) Game Preview
Why UTEP Will Win
Does UTEP have an offense now? It’s easy to look great against Houston Baptist, but for a program that’s known nothing but misery for the last few seasons, getting a 144-yard, two-touchdown rushing day from a running back is something to build around.
Treyvon Hughes came up with a huge day, Brandon Jones threw down the field for a few big plays, and the Miners were able to overcome a few big mistakes with over 500 yards of total offense.
Somehow, the Miners have to punch Texas Tech right away with Hughes and the ground attack trying to take control to keep the Red Raider O off the field, because …
Why Texas Tech Will Win
The UTEP secondary is about to get destroyed.
Houston Baptist had the lead in the fourth quarter, and it took a UTEP field goal to finally get by with the 36-34 win. The Miners were hit for 300 yards and two scores through the air, and now they have to deal with a tuned-up Alan Bowman.
The Red Raider quarterback is healthy again, and he looked in midseason form in the blowout win over Montana State with a 40-of-53 day for 436 yards and two touchdowns.
The 45-10 victory was about getting all the parts working under new head coach Matt Wells, and everything worked. If last week was about the offense, this time around is about getting more from the defense that didn’t do much to get to the quarterback.
What’s Going To Happen
Texas Tech will be sharp in the first quarter, and it’s not going to stop. The team is still getting used to the coaching staff, and vice versa, as it uses this easy day to keep sharpening up. With two weeks off before playing Nevada, the starters will play a little bit longer – the score will get out of hand in the first half.
