Texas A&M (2-2) vs. Arkansas (2-2) Game Preview

Why Texas A&M Will Win

San Jose State 31, Arkansas 24.

The Hog offense just isn’t working, and now it has to go against an Aggie defense and a team that really, really needs a win.

Arkansas is turning the ball over way too often, the passing game is struggling to click, and yards aren’t necessarily translating into points. The attack is stalling in the red zone, the third down conversions aren’t there, and now it has to go against a defense that’s only allowing teams to hit 27% of their third down chances.

The Aggie offensive line is doing a decent job, the team dominates the time of possession battle, and the secondary has been solid. As long as A&M doesn’t start turning the ball over in bunches, and if it can get up early and make Arkansas throw, it should be at least as good as San Jose State.

Why Arkansas Will Win

A&M is too sleepy.

It’s slow-and-go style is great at controlling the clock and taking over the tempo of games, but the rushing attack is just okay, and there’s just no visible juice. The team seemed lethargic in the loss to Clemson, and it didn’t seem to have the same sort fire and energy Auburn brought to last week’s key game.

The one positive about the Hog loss to San Jose State last week? There’s nothing to lose now.

No one is expecting anything out of the team, and this week, all the pressure in the stadium is on the A&M side after its loss to Auburn.

No, the Arkansas offense isn’t consistent enough, and it’s not efficient enough, but the passing attack is putting up yards. Nick Starkel taking over the string quarterback job, and now the former Aggie has ramped up the passing game.

Starkel hit Colorado State for 305 yards and three touchdowns, and he threw for three more scores and 356 yards against San Jose State, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

What’s Going To Happen

Starkel isn’t going to wear a Justin Bieber t-shirt under his jersey this time around. That’s not why he threw five interceptions against the Spartans, but it certainly wasn’t a positive.

He’ll push the passing game on the Texas A&M secondary, and the Hogs will come up with a far, far better performance, but it won’t be nearly enough to overcome one of the sharpest games yet from Aggie QB Kellen Mond.

Just okay so far, Mond threw for 335 yards and two score against Auburn, and he had his moments against Clemson, but he hasn’t stepped up to become the next-level star some were hoping he’d be. He ran for 109 yards in his first game against the Hogs, but he struggled last year with no touchdown passes and two picks in the close-call 24-17 win.

He’ll be terrific, the Aggie defense will come up with a good performance, and A&M will come up with its first win over a Power Five team this season.
