Syracuse (1-0) vs. Maryland (1-0) Game Preview
Why Syracuse Will Win
The Syracuse pass rush picked up where it left off after a terrific 2018.
It might have been the Liberty offensive line trying to stop the tremendous Orange defensive ends, but it was coming from all sides in the 24-0 win over the Flames.
Lakeim Williams led the way with 11 tackles and 1.5 sacks, but the rest of the key parts got into the act, too, with eight sacks and 14 tackles for loss. The Terps didn’t give up a sack last week against Howard, but … it was Howard.
Don’t totally dismiss the SU win over Liberty, just because it’s Liberty. The Flames have a dangerous offense with a whole lot of explosion, and while the SU secondary allowed one big play, it was able to stuff everything against the run. Thanks to the sack, LU finished with -4 net yards, and only came up with 49 outside of all of the sacks.
Why Maryland Will Win
Welcome back, Josh Jackson.
The Terps got in the scrimmage they needed under new head coach Mike Locklsey, rolling out 56 first half points on the way to the 79-0 win over Howard. Jackson – the former Virginia Tech quarterback – was great from the start, throwing for 245 yards and four scores.
The ground game rolled at will, too, coming up with 317 yards and five touchdowns, but the win was all about getting the passing game to click.
On the other side, Syracuse’s new starting quarterback Tommy DeVito struggle on the road. He didn’t hit half of his passes, couldn’t do much down the field, and ended up throwing two picks. The Orange got the win, but in this, as long as the Terp offensive line can hold up and Jackson can get the ball out of his hands in a hurry, the chains should keep moving.

What’s Going To Happen
The Maryland defense will do its part – it came up with eight sacks against Howard – even though the early storyline will be the devastating Syracuse defensive front owning the first quarter.
Can DeVito be a whole lot better and stronger than he was in Week 1? Not really, and Moe Neal and the ground game won’t be able to pick up the slack. It’ll be a lower-scoring game than expected, and it’s not going to be anything pretty.
The Terps will be happy to take the hard-fought win, though, as Jackson outplays DeVito.
