Stanford (1-0) vs. USC (1-0) Game Preview
Why Stanford Will Win
Is Kedon Slovis really ready to handle what’s coming?
Northwestern might not be Oklahoma offensively, but it came into the game with Stanford with a veteran O and two great quarterback prospects in Hunter Johnson and TJ Green to rotate in. Green got beaten up and injured, and Johnson – the one-time superstar Clemson recruit – completed 6-of-17 passes with two picks.
The Stanford defense deleted Northwestern’s offensive account, stuffing the run all game long, not allowing anything down the field, and allowing just 210 yards of total offense.
The Cardinal dominated the time of possession battle, controlled the clock, and showed off enough of a running game to survive. Yes, QB KJ Costello is hurt and out, but Davis Mills is a better No. 2 option than Slovis, but …
Why USC Will Win
The freshman was thrown to the wolves – or the Bulldogs – and came through just fine.
When starter JT Daniels went down with a torn ACL against Fresno State, USC had to turn to Slovis, and he hit 6-of-8 throws for 57 yards with a pick. As long as the offensive line is able to pave the way for another big day from Vavae Malepeai, the O can survive.
The Bulldogs have a nasty defense, but USC was able to pound away a bit, Tyler Vaughns stretched the field, Stephen Carr did a little of everything out of the backfield, and the offense was able to do enough to survive.
Stanford doesn’t have the explosion to run away with this offensively, and USC can make this a war of attrition. As long as Slovis isn’t making a whole bunch of big mistakes, and the parts around him can help control the clock, the Trojans can survive, but …
What’s Going To Happen
The four USC turnovers against Fresno State were the problem.
Stanford might be beaten up after an ultra-violent game against Northwestern, but it was able to get enough of a running game out of Cameron Scarlett to keep things moving, and the passing attack was good enough – it was great under Costello and good enough under Mills.
There’s still an outside shot of Costello playing after taking a shot to his head, but either way, the better quarterback play from the Cardinal will be the difference in a low-scoring defensive slugfest.
