Purdue (0-1) vs. Vanderbilt (0-1) Game Preview
Why Purdue Will Win
It’s desperation time for the Boilermakers after the disastrous collapse loss to Nevada. Lose this, and that’s effectively it for any hopes of going bowling.
There were plenty of positives in the loss, starting with Elijah Sindelar and the passing game. He threw two key picks, but he also bombed away for 423 yards and four scores, Rondale Moore was Rondale Moore, and the air show worked.
The key will be ball control. Vanderbilt only had the ball for 26 minutes in the loss to Georgia and couldn’t convert on third downs, and keeping the chains moving wasn’t a problem for the Boilermakers. The -5 turnover margin was the killer – Purdue won’t have those turnover problems again, at least at that level.
Why Vanderbilt Will Win
The secondary was fantastic against Georgia. The run defense had a big problem against the amazing Bulldog offensive front, and Purdue doesn’t have the same sort of line. It might have been a 30-6 final score, but it was a competitive fight after the first quarter.
It didn’t look like it against Georgia, but Vandy really does have the skill guys who can blow up. RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn wasn’t able to break out, and top WR Kalija Lipscomb was shut down – that’s not happening this week.
Don’t assume the Commodores can’t blow up if this gets into a shootout. The parts are there.
What’s Going To Happen
Expect a fun seesaw game with a whole lot of points and big plays.
The Boilermaker offense will need to be a bit more balance, and it has to stop with all of the mistakes. The two teams will combine for at least 800 yards, with Purdue coming up with a big late drive to survive a thriller in a last-team-with-the-ball likely going to pull this off.
