Penn State (3-0) vs. Maryland (2-1) Game Preview
Why Maryland Will Win
Maryland has had two weeks off after the total clunker against Temple. Was that the real offense, or was it the one that ripped apart Syracuse the week before?
It’s probably somewhere in between, but on the plus side, the offense actually did work in the 20-17 loss to Temple. The plays were there, the opportunities were in place, but the team didn’t execute. That’s what the time off will do to help.
If the O can get going right away and the Terps can get their guys in open space – and if Josh Jackson can hit them on a consistent basis – Penn State might not have the offense to keep up the pace. The Nittany Lions can’t move the chains – they’re last among Big Ten teams and 127th in the nation in third down conversions – and they don’t do anything to control the clock.
Maryland might have a whole lot of flash, but it’s a controlled lightning. It’s great at getting into the backfield on defense, and owning the tempo on the other side. Penn State has to be ready to take advantage of its opportunities.
Why Penn State Will Win
How do you stop the Maryland offense? Get the pass rush cranked up right away, and few defenses are better at getting into the backfield.
There might be a whole slew of concerns and problems across the Penn State board, but it doesn’t beat itself. It doesn’t turn the ball over, it doesn’t get flagged, and its defense is great at getting off the field with key sacks and big defensive plays.
The offense might be a little lacking, but it takes advantage of its chances and the ground game has been working just fine. But again, it’s about the play of the defensive front.
Temple’s pass rush hasn’t been any big deal early on this season, but it got to Josh Jackson with four sacks and multiple pressures, and the D came up with ten tackles for loss as it stymied the Terp attack time and again. Penn State has come up with at least ten tackles for loss in each of its three games. However …
What’s Going To Happen
Maryland can get into the backfield, too.
The Terps might not be as disruptive as Penn State’s defensive front, but it should be able to do just enough to be a bother.
Maryland’s offense won’t destroy the Nittany Lion D, but it’ll be just effective enough with its balance and pop to take to set a quick pace. Jackson will be far, far sharper than he was against Temple, and new head coach Mike Locksley will come up with his first really, really big win as the Maryland head man.
