Penn State (1-0) vs. Buffalo (1-0) Game Preview
Why Buffalo Will Win
The parts are there to be an actual challenge for at least a little while – the Bulls have playmakers in a deep backfield.
The Bulls appeared to pick up where they left off – at least before the 2018 MAC Championship.
The Bulls didn’t throw a whole lot – there’s no Tyree Jackson around anymore – but the running game was able to get off to a hot start, QB Matt Myers threw two touchdown passes, and there weren’t any issues in the 38-10 win over Robert Morris.
UB keeps the Colonials out of the backfield, the defense bent a bit but didn’t break in the second half, and it got a chance to get Myers – a freshman – enough work to not come into this totally cold.
Penn State might have been able to fire at will in the ugly win over Idaho, but it struggled on third downs – that’s about the only nitpicky issue in the 79-7 win. Buffalo has to get Myers on the move early on, and the running game has to work right away.
Why Penn State Will Win
Yeah, it was only against Idaho, but that’s about as good as the Nittany Lions can look.
The defense lived behind the line, Sean Clifford threw for 280 yards and two scores, and the running game ripped off huge runs on the way to a 58-0 lead going into the fourth quarter.
And most of all, there wasn’t anything happening from the Idaho running game. Buffalo will have to try pounding away early on to stay alive, and it’ll end up being in several third-and-long situations. Myers might be promising, but he’s about to be thrown to the wolves.
He’ll have to throw more than ten times, and when he does, here comes the Penn State pass rush. The Buffalo offensive line is fine, but it’s not going to handle Yetur Gross-Matos and everything the Nittany Lions are going to bring, which is why …
What’s Going To Happen
This will be another terrific game for the Penn State defense.
Sean Clifford still isn’t going to be accurate enough – he completed 14-of-23 passes against Idaho – but he’ll hit on a few big plays, and it’ll be running back by committee on offense. The D, though, will be what makes this a walk in the part.
Buffalo will stall too often, the running game won’t do enough on first downs, and it’ll be a second straight laugher in Happy Valley.
